K, so iv been gettin this Low coolant level on the msg display for...about 5 months (of driving) and just a few min ago, on my way home i ran high into the red line on the temp and i got the check engine temp on the display, i slammed on the breaks and turned off the car (dont want to blow a gasket) and i go look to see if a hose or somethin slipped off, but nothin. The coolant resovuar had coolant dripping down the sides from arround the cap. and there was a big ol puddle of coolant on the road where i was sittin. It went back down to N and i got back in and drove the 1/4 mi home, and it went back to red and check engine temp or w/e came on when i pulled into the driveway. Im guessing my water pump died? anyone? Please help.

The T-Stat how to is in the tech articles.

And the water pump is SIMPLE, I would replace it with a 99 and newer unit.

It sounds like the thermostat to me. When you get the old one out boil it to see if it opens.

Riddle: Whats green and tan, smokes rubber, and smells like antifreeze ?

Just kidding!

MY CAR! :)

Ill replace the tstat first cuz that looks easier and cheeper to do...if that doesnt solve the problem, ill do the water pump.

i used to get that message when it was very cold outside, or when i was parked on an incline....

I went to pepboys to get the new t-stat, and i remembered something about putting in a 160deg t-stat from a mustang increases performance or somethin, but i couldnt find any of them there...whats that all about?

I tell ya, if thats not the hardest t-stat to replace, i dont know what is. I got about 1/2 way done, and i lost light...ill finish tomorow. Hopefully thats the problem.

A simpler fix might have been to refill the coolant system via the crossover tube and see if that fixes things first.

Have you been having to refill the system time and time again?

no, i havent had to refill the system in over a year now, it just kept saying low coolant.

Yeah, that thermostat sucks. Whoever thought of that design needs a swift kick in the balls. I've had a 160 in mine for well over a year now with no problems - and the heat in the car is unreal. Any competent parts place (read: everywhere BUT Pep Boys) should carry a 160 stat for the car.

Its so funny how people have such a time with such an easy job. This is a 10-15 minute job!

Again, raise the car either on ramps or a lift. Generously spray the top half of the housing with PB Break Free, wait 10 minutes, during this time drain the coolant from the petcock, then use a 3/8 2ft extension with a 10mm socket and approach from the bottom, this way you have clean, clear shots on both bolts, they pop right off, swap stats and reverse?

yeah, well i was attempting it with just a 3" extension. That was a bitch and a half, this mornin i went out and got a foot extension and a universial joint (to replace the ones my friend misplaced) and your right, it didnt take much more than 5-10 min to take it apart, put it together, take it apart, put it together, and now do it again. The only bitch now is them damn hose clamps, im just gonna go buy some screw hose clamps for that thing.

That's what she said.
What do you expect when you short-shaft her.

She never has to worry about short shaftin ;) ,just forgot to bring my A game:p

The spring clamps are EASY to use. There is a special tool that allows you to hold it open while you position it, then let off, and it sets.

Why do you have to remove the hose clamps? Just leave it all in tact and bend the bottom half away to get the stat out.

Everybody likes doing things the hard way.:p
