whats the special tool that you are refering to mike?
 
It's designed sort of like a pair of pliers, but the tip is designed to hold the spring clamp ends. It also has a locking mechanism that will hold the clamp open for you when you squeeze the handle.

They have inexpensive ones for about $10 at sears, and they have fancier, more expensive remote style ones that are good for hard to reach locations.

k, ill take a look tomorow. they sure are a pain to try to do with regular pliers.
 
Snap-on has a good spring clamp tool. Have one myself and it has prevented a lot of frustration and cussing and bleeding hands! Worth the investment if you do a lot of tinkering with this style of hose clamp.
 
Had the same EXACT problem a few months ago and I needed a new radiator... fixed it like a charm, but good luck to you.
