I am new to the site and have a issue with lincoln. i have a 2005 lincoln ls v6 and yesterday the car started to hesitate under a load. it got pretty bad so i took it to the local advance auto and had them scan the cel. the code was P0351 Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction. now obviously this means a coil is bad. my question however is which coil is coil a? i have searched for hours trying to find out what coil a is and have had no luck. unless i am looking in the wrong place i dont know. any help would be very much appreciated. thanks

I would think coil "A" is the same as coil 1.

This is also what i assume as well. However i only want to take the intake mani off once so i want to be sure before i start digging in.

If you're going to have the intake off anyway do yourself a favor and replace all 3 coils and plugs. You don't want to have to remove the intake on a regular basis.

i agree with what you are saying, however, i was able to remove the coil without removing the intake manifold. now all i have to do is get me a new coil and hopefully all is well. thanks for the help and support. if this does not fix the issue i will be back with more questions. again thanks to all.:)

Update on what's going on with the car. I haven't changed anything yet. I had the cel cut off and drove the car until it came back on. The codes are a little different now. Now I have catalyst deficiency code showing as well as coil pack a primary/secondary circuit as well as a missfire on cylinder 6. Now I know we have discussed about how coil pack a is cylinder 1 but my new question is that when these cars read a missfire is it more prone to be a bad spark plug vs a coil pack?

Bad coils but is a rule if thump that you replace both. How many miles you have just change them all and call it a tune up. EBay has cheap coils do a search.

the car is about to rollover to 112k. ill check out ebay but dont really like to shop there unless its a serious have to. i bought one coil the other day at advance. i replace the cylinder 6 coil. i havent driven the car yet so we will see what happens. this is the only cylinder that i did notice had the original coil on it. so maybe, just maybe, this was the issue. i did pull all 3 cops and plugs on the driver side since they are easy to get to just to check for valvecover leaks and bad plugs. all looked good. if it still misfires i may replace the cylinder 6 coil with the one removed to save my good one. just keep trial and error until i get the money for a full tune up. also the car has autolite double platinum plugs. is this the best plug for the car? i have never ran a platinum plug before i any of my cars but then again most of my other cars were hondas and drag cars.

Well good news. I changed the coilpack on cylinder 6 and problem solved. Now it time to get the catalyst deffisiency code to go away. So to me that means time to start exhaust shopping. Big thanks to all for help and support. Hopefully i will be able to return the favor. Even though i need to read into these cars more im still knowledgeable of the basics.

New 01 Ls V8 109K miles owner(2wks) had to do same , coils plugs and now engine light is back on and got code for Catalyst, man this is tougher than I expected, very limited knowledge in this area,Love the car and hope it clears up,please keep me / us posted on your next move ref code etc..

Running for a period of time with a bad COP will cause unburned fuel to go straight to the cat and combust in there, which is way too hot for the cat, and cause the cat to fail.
So the appropriate cat is probably fried.
