Ok guys, I need your expertise.

I have a 2000 LS V8 with 92k miles. On start up, I'm getting a high pitch squeal for a couple of minutes, until I get on the highway (5 minutes - 2 or 3 miles).

And on a separate note, I'm getting a ticking (matches with the revs), seems to be coming more from the bottom/right side of the engine bay.

What do you guys think are the problems, and how worried should I be?

Thanx in advance for your answers and suggestions.

could be related. if you have a pump failing and causing excessive load it could cause the squeaking and the ticking

Ok,...

Would there be anyway to tell/test which pump may be giving the trouble?!?

location of the noise would be a giveaway. or pull the belt and try spinning them by hand.

The ticking is more than likely unrelated to your high pitch squeel.......though, I could be wrong. The LS has an aluminum block and steel exhaust manifolds which cool at different temperatures/heat up at different temperatures. This causes the exhaust manifold gaskets to not work effectively because they can't create a seal and the resulting sound is heard.......essentially it is an exhaust leak.

As for the high pitch squeel, I would check your belt and make sure it doesn't have a lot of play in it (as in push on the belt and make sure you don't have too much slack). It could be something like your belt tensioner causing the problem. Or maybe your belt is getting wet via coolant/oil/etc and causing the noise.......which would go away once your engine warms up due to the liquid burning up. It's just a thought. Take a good luck at all your components and your belt and maybe you'll find something there.

my car just recently started that same squeel. i will ask lincoln what it could be since it is already in there for a coil. ill let you know what they say

Now that you mention it,... today, the squeal is gone. We've been getting a lot of rain here (PA), and it's been very damp. Do you think that would cause the squeal? And if/so, is that something that will happen every time it rains hard... or have high humidity?!?

Thanx,... keep me updated!!

got the ls back today and they said they couldnt find anything wrong with the car as far as making it squeel they said it is probably from all the rain

a wet belt should have more than enough "grip" to not squeal in the rain. Belt could be worn, be contaminated, have a bad tensioner...or a pulley causing too much drag.

ha ha then everything 'must' be ok... They probably checked for codes lol

is it a squeal or more of a high pitched whine? I had the whine LOUDLY before I replaced my failing alternator. Whine went away, but is slowly coming back ever so slightly. Replacement alternator still fine and putting out 14+ volts at rev...

hey beaups sorry but i was there and watched what they did. so i think you should take your "advice" somewhere else

everybody calm down. common reasons for squealing. bad belt, bad tensioner(not common), bad or going bad alternator, misaligned pulleys, or one of the pulleys and what it is connected is causing it to drag. easiest way to locate exactly where the problem is, this goes for the ticking too. get a rubber hose about two to three feet long, depending on how tall you are, put your ear up to one side and put the other closer to the noise, the louder it gets the closer you are, you will find the problem, CAUTION: Do not get the hose caught in the fan or the belt. you have been warned.

what's your problem? I didn't give you any "advice". Belts don't squeak unless something is wrong, period. not because it's rainy, or foggy, or humid. If it squeaks, something is wrong. If you believe when the dealer says nothing is wrong, well then something is wrong w/you.

hey i'm the big one standing up on 2 legs.

Seriously wicked my sarcasm wasnt directed at you. it was directed at the crappy diagnostics we get on these cars. seems if there's no code..."everything is fine"

i just went to the auto parts store today after the aqueeking has been getting worse and the pulley on the passenger side top next to the valve cover is wobbleing ican anyone tell me what pulley that is id appreciate it thanks

I told you...damn dealers....passenger side high on my 03 v8 i believe is the water pump or just a dummy pully. left low is alternator

not sure on 01. on 03 power steering and a/c are both right side.

My squealing went away... for the time being anyway. I used some belt dressing,... and went on a long trip to SC... in the rain... No more problems.

Now about the ticking.... any suggestions? Could I use a high temperature sealant or something?
