I believe for it to be 'legal' the exhaust has to exit behind the 'passenger cabin' - so that's why a coupe can get away with it, the exhaust is usually well behind the door opening.

That's what I thought as well.... until I saw the new SLR Mclaren. Those exhaust tips are in front of the passenger cabin.
