Well i've had my LS for over a year now and was waiting for the infamous coil problem to come about and it finally did this weekend with the CEL, stuttering and rough idle. The code read misfire in cylinder 3 so with the help of this forum im pretty positive its the coils and i know its best to replace all at the same time and highly recommended to replace the VCG as well. Are there any recommendations for coils to either avoid or try to find? and same for spark plugs?...i've been looking on ebay and they have sets of 8 for anywhere from $80 on up for coils, seems a little cheap to me

Dude, you get what you pay for. I paid ~$75 for one coil at NAPA. They did have an off-brand for ~$45 but I opted for the name (Echlin) brand.

I just went through all that research too. Decided to go with Motorcraft.

I ended up calling Max (see add at right from Five Star Ford/Chapman Ford), and got 8 Motorcraft COP's, 8 Motorcraft spark plugs, and VCG's from him. (I forgot the cost, but since it's a common problem, I decided to just fix it right with Motorcraft and not take chances). Turned out I did not have oil on the old COP's, and Max allowed the VCG's to be returned as long as they were not opened.

Max will give you a quote over the phone. Mention LVC for the discount!

got mine from alanisdeals on ebay 3 years and only had to replace one so far

you get what you pay for, having to already replace one in 3 years seems a bit early. Get motorcraft ones, there's nothing better than that for the LS.

I replaced mine with cheapo ebay kit, did the gasket at the same time. no probs so far, they've been in the car for 3 years.

I usually try to get original parts where their location and function is as important as the coils are. However, not to be a smart ass but if the originals are so much better, why is coil failure such a common problem in the first place ? After all the lincoln comes with the Motorcraft ones installed in it originally right?

Cheers

The newest rev Motorcraft coils (from Max) do seem to be much better. I have over 80K on one set and about 60K on another with no issues yet. Of course, I made it to about 60K before the previous coils started to go.

I bbought some BWD coils from Advance Auto Parts. They sell them for $50. I've been running with these for a few years. No problems. "KNOCK ON WOOD"

OEM is the way to go. and like someone said, you get what you pay for

I converted to Accel about 50K miles ago. Everything's just fine, but you DO have to reverse the wiring. Check 'search' for particulars.

My '06 needed them before 50k miles. It was just running rough. I never even got a CEL. I bought mine from alanisdeals on ebay as well. He has good feedback and answers any question quickly. That is one of the reason I picked his. So far, so good. I obviously could not see the internals but they appeared to be VERY well built. The boots were well built. I have heard from some people that the VERY cheap coils have noticeably poor quality boots. Those coils have a VERY high failure rate.

Your 06 at less than 50K miles should have still been under full factory warranty, unless this just happened and you purchased in 05.

4 years and 70K on cheap ebay coils. They have lasted longer than OEM so far. I did replace VCGs with OEM when I changed the coils and plugh though.

LS Coils are warrantied for 100k, correct?

78k on my '06 with no issues yet..

The 03 to 05 V8 is covered for 100K miles.

The 06 and the 00 to 02 have no extended coverage.

The V6 of any year has no extended coverage.

LOL @ "you get what you pay for" when many here have had failed OEM coils at 60k miles or even less. lol

Same here. And about half of my cheap ebay coils still had a motorcraft label on top.

For info...

My LS V8 coils were replaced under warranty at soemthing like 30,000 miles. The gaskets were dry, no oil. Ditto on dry and clean at plug change at about 116K miles.

Now, at about 123,000 miles at least one of them is getting flakey. Stumbles on the freeway when it is over 100 degrees out. Also had check engine light a coupld time under moderate hard acceleration while hot.

So it looks like factory coils are good for maybe 100K miles, but I am almost sure high outside temps age them a bit faster. My first set died at 30,000 after idling with AC on for 90 minutes on a 105 degree day. Was stuck on shut down freeway due to a huge accident.

Past experience with "critical" parts is that OEM is usually better since the fit and function is for sure and like every one is saying you get what you pay for. In my mind it is more like "What did they cut out to get that low price?"

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I hear you, but your two statements bolded and underlined above..conflict with one another, wouldnt you agree?

Ahhh so this must be where our quarterly 'coil experience' thread is.

thanks everybody for the replies, i ended up using alanisdeals on ebay, they seemed like pretty good coils when i put them in and everything is running good so far
