What's the deepest gear people are running in their Marks? I'm thinking about going 4.56 or 4.88. I don't do much highway driving.

I am running 4.10s but want to step up to 4.56s. I don't know of anyone running them in a Mark though. Driller has 4.30s I believe.

And you probably won't be doing much highway driving if you are at 4.88!!

4.30's are good even on the highway. You won't win high speed runs, but they wake the car up nicely, so who really cares if I can do 200mph? I can easily cruise up north to my brothers and back with no problems (3hrs each way.) :) Make sure to have some decent tires though if your going to play in town or track, and like dnehthend said a cooler too, as they are always helpful with any gear ;)
I wish I hadn't taken them out of my car, I regret it every day I get in it!

I have 4.56 gears trak lok in my mark viii. Was gonna run it with a 3500 stall converter but the setup went south quick. I was stoked for it to :q:q:q:q and git to its trap but never happened, oh well life goes on. By the way its for sale if interested.

PM'd ya.

Yeah, I think im going to go with 4.56 gears. 4.88 just seem like too much. I was originally going to go 4.10s but had heard not to "fear the gear".

A trans cooler is mainly more needed for a higher stall converter, not gear change. Almost all the heat created from a trans is from the converter, and the higher numerical rear gear means less torque put on engine and trans therefore torque converter will stay locked up longer which equates to cooler temps. anytime the torque converter is locked there is no slip, now if having the gear means more fun and you are non stop WOT than that is a different story.

Was that a straight swap just like any other gear change? I have heard 4.56s don't fit with the IRS dif cover but have not gotten info from someone hat has actually done it.

I was waiting for that post! :D

lol, no doubt. Didn't take long, eh?! ;)
I took it for a drive with the 3.27's when I first switched back, and it was like "yah, ok, still not bad, I can live with this..."
Then when I pulled up next to one of the guys 'stangs at work whom I used to be even with or a hair quicker than, it was like "oh, nooooooooooooooooooo, lol... :("

I thought it would be real bad in the snow with those gears, but I'm thinking it wouldn't have been much worse as I could always start in 2nd worst case ('tis nice to have with the 4R70W where my VII didn't with the AOD, which I didn't think of then either), and I do have seperate rims with pure snow tires on 'em, so I probably would have been good... I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now...

They fit. 4.56's are the same size as any other 8.8 gears. Tons of IRS Cobras running 4.56's, including mine.

I know some of the solid rear 8.8's had cross-pin clearance issues with 4.56+ gears, I'm not sure whats the diff on the carriers though...

Absolutely correct, with 4.56's and up, the pins have to be modified in a solid axle car.

Not applicable here, though, and the cover definitely isn't an issue.

LOL

I think you would have been fine in the snow with the right tires I ran around all winter with 4:10s.

I didn't want to but had little choice.

This was indeed a straight swap. We built the car to top out at 105 in the 1/4 but get outta the gate pretty :q:q:q:qing fast.
