Hi again
i first want to thank all you guys (and gals?) for welcoming me into your automotive world.

As some of you know i do not yet own a lincoln :(
,so i am reading a lot on here as i decide what exactly i want to own mark 8 wise.

I guess what i want to ask is what year/s do you all prefer (not considering the body styles between gen 1/2,just mfg yr)

lets just say i am an only looking at gen 1....would i be better with a 95 and earlier without obdii or a 96 with obdii?

and also how do you guys feel about the differences from gen 1 to gen 2.(again ,not talking body changes)

Thanks again

Mike

I have owned 3 Mark VIII's and they all have been Gen 1's. (2) 1993's and (1) 1995. It is hard to say which one that I like better....between the 93-94's or the 95-96's (93-94 have the single din radio, and the 95-96 have the double din radio.....where as the 96 & up have the obdii). I like the single din radio option in the 93-94's for ease of radio installation, but with the double din you have more things you can stuff in there. The LATE LATE 1995 LSC's have the HID option, but they are VERY hard to locate. The 96 LSC has the HID option, and the higher horsepower motor (290 with the LSC vice 280 non LSC....one due to the dual exhaust). The LSC's have better looking seats (perferated leather vice solid) and most come with the 3.27 gear ratio vice the 3.08 that is the norm. Other than that there is not much difference in the Gen 1's.

I would recommend trying to purchase a 95-96 due to the fact that they are newer. You have to be aware that the suspension will prolly be one of the first things on any of the Gen 1's that will need to be replaced since the suspension is close to, if not over, 10 years old by now and about due for replacement (compressor, and front struts).

As far as the Gen 2's are concerned, I do not own one, so I really can not speak on them. One thing I do know is that they are supposedly slower in the 1/4 than the Gen 1's.......sorry Gen 2ers....you know this is true....not given mods of course. One kool thing that I like is the fact that the Gen 2's have the tilt/telescoping steering wheel (another thing known to go out over time). I know that there is other things, but like I said, since I do not own one, I really can not say much.

I know that I do not particularly like the Gen 2's, and would most likely not own one....if I had the choice between a Gen 1 and Gen 2.....same options.....I would go with the Gen 1.....I just like them better.

I can help with this question... I was in your position going CRAZY trying to figure out which I wanted. I went back and forth, forth and back, from Gen1 to Gen2. I finally made my decision using a chart similar to this:

Gen1 Pro's
Faster
Less cost of maintenance (less things to break...)
Cheaper to buy

Gen2 Pro's
Nice lights
Much more common for LSC trim
Cleaner/newer looking front end
Nicer interior

A bit more detailed though cause I'm insane, but that's the basic idea. I weighed out my options and figured out a Gen 1 was what I wanted, and luckily found an LSC so I guess I got the best of both worlds. I figured I'm broke, so I'd rather not spend a few extra grand buying a Gen 2 and then have to fix the HID headlamps, LED tail lights, telescopic steering wheel, 97 blend door, etc. Fixing one can get kinda costly.

Anyways, to sum it up: If you are looking for a daily driver that looks nice and new, and if you have about $13,000 for a nice 98 LSC plus money in the bank for repairs, I'd suggest a Gen 2. If you wanna build a quarter mile queen, or short on cash, get a Gen 1. They are still quite nice and many Lincoln people prefer the Gen 1 look anyways.

Where were you when I bought the GEN 2 ... I hate you, all be it from jealousy, I hate you. :joke

I'm at the "Money in the bank" portion of my GEN 2 owning experiences,

Telescop Wheel -shot
Tilt Wheel -shot
Heater Fan -repaired by our NE Chap Pres! :)
Blend Door - Permanently on Heat
LED Taillamps -Surprisingly PERFECT
Air Supension -Repaired by Lincoln
Stereo System -"Quirky"
Transmission -Replaced
Silly Door Lamps -Gone

Hey Y'all,

I've owned both... A 95 (Gen-1) and my current 98 (Gen-2)
I have to say, the 95 was quicker but there were some mods...

I generally like the 98 better. Mostly because of the front grill... I think grill on the Gen-1's was a weak spot... Ford didn't put much thought there.
The interior is just a bit nicer on the Gen-2, but thats really about it... Other than 1 thing. My color (Which I sought out) wasn't offered on the Gen-1's.

Just my perspective...

I own a gen 2 and love it....although i've never even been in a gen1. I never even considered buying a gen 1 because they look soo much older. My car is 97 and people ask me (obviously not lincoln fanatics) all the time if it's 00 or 01. the gen2 has some parts that were ahead of it's time (which is of course what all us gen2 owners payfor...to own and replace) which i love....mostly the neon tube taillight. Just offering my two sense.

I like the ammenities on the 97. Lucky for me right now nothing is really wrong with any of it, but that's part of owning these cars. You have to realize that there are going to be parts that will need replaced, regardless of the Generation. The Gen 2 Mark's are supposedly heavier, and thus cause them to be slower. The headlights are more expensive to replace, but are worth it compared to the horrible lights of the non-HID first Gen. The neon rear light is much more prone to going out on the Gen 1's than the Gen 2's. There are also many other "little" things here and there that the Gen 1's had wrong with them. For example, the transmissions on the Gen 1's have a problem with the accumulator, I believe. If not taken care of the tranny doesn't take the abuse very well. I personally love the feel of the Gen 2 more, and love the look more. But it's really about what you are looking for, what you know about the cars, and how willing and eager you are to get your hands dirty and fix stuff should something go wrong.

PS - I got a 1997 LSC for $5200, so there is no need to spend $13,000 on a Gen 2. ;)

Get a 96 or 98. Decent lights on the '96 and no tranny problems on the '98.

Everybody that has a Gen 1 wishes they had a Gen 2.

A simple computer reflash or a chip can give the 2nd Gen the same type of performance as the 1st gen. IMHO, of course. Hey, I've owned both so I am entitled to my opinion.

Why not a 97....(u've got me worried) do they have some year-specific probs?

98 had a few simple tranny fixes that could cause problems on a 97, but upgrade a 97 for a few hundred bucks and you'll be okay.

Don't turn this into a stupid war, the first post I made in this thread was to point out the good things about each generation, it just depends on what you want out of the car.

Am I correct in assuming that gen 2 is 95 and up? I am looking for a relitively inexpensive daily driver.

NOPE....gen 1 covers the 1993-1996 production, gen 2 is the 97 and the 98,you can really tell the differance with the neon tail, and rounded front grill, i like the gen 1 for mods and less electonical items to wear, i also like the gen 1 front grill as opposed to the gen 2 , but I would love the neon tail, although those are known for probs, i'd also like the HID, but i go for gen 1's :Beer

trouble with my mark

could youtell me how you fixed your telescoping wheel? thanks, sandman

Gen1 without question, I have a 94' and if I ever had to get a new car (God forbid) it would be a 96' just cuz its newer. I think gen2's have too many kick-ass things going for them for me to list off, but I prefer the relative simplicity of the gen1 electrically, the fact they use wires, and the styling to me seams to stand out more... its truly just a matter of taste. Rest assured that either choice you make will leave you with one crazy nice ride!!

I Love My 98 Lsc...blk On Blk..would'nt Trade Her For The World..
(any And Every Cars Has It Dog Days Being In The Shop,it's Normal, but Whats Not Normal Is When U Create Something To Happen For It To Be In The Shop)

LOL I HEAR YA WHEN U SAID ..PEOPLE ASK U IF IT AN 01 OR 02.....JUST 2 DAYS AGO I WAS AT A FLOWERSHOP AND THIS GUY PARKED BEHIND ME GOING TO SAME PLACE SAYS..LOL MAM'E IS THAT AN LOL 05?MY MOM IS LOOKING FOR ONE JUST LIKE THAT BUT SHE CAN'T FIND ONE,SHE BEEN CALLING DEALERS ASKIN FOR THIS CAR AND GOING IN ALL THE NEWSPAPERS...LOL AND NO ONE HAS IT..WHERE DID U GET URS?
AFTER LAUGHING IN MY HEAD ON WHAT IM HEARING I TOLD HIM IT'S A 98'..HE LITERALLY WAS JUMPIN UP N DOWN LIKE HE COULD'NT BELEIVE IT... IT'S FUNNY HOW PEOPLE REACT.SO AFTER LEAVING I HEAR HIM YAPPIN TO HIS MOM HE SAW THE CAR OF HER DREAM AND IT RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM...LOL...AGAIN I WAS LAUGHIN IN MY HEAD ;D

To me the Gen 1s look meaner! The gen 2 seem to have gotten soft...

The Mark VIII I feel was designed to grab a younger crowed that it never did until the younger crowd could afford the Older models..

Gen 2s have nice toys.. More than the Gen 1s...

But the Price of the Gen 1s is much better...

I have a 93 and a 95.... 93 much smoother with the solid drive shaft..

The 95 nicer radio... I really don't notice much between the years 93 - 96..

Most claim the 93s are the fastest.. of the bunch some say the 95 are the slowest..

I would agree as my 93 seems to be the car that I would rather take up against the Ricers.....

But Then the I've never put each against the other..

With Mods I guess it wouldn't matter much..

My Wife likes the 93 better and that's finek, I'll have 2 when she's done with it LOL...

Oh and bye the way I'd never turn down a Gen 2 and would like to join the sweet 24 club and have another Mark VIII a 98....

My 2 cents
