Gen 1 LS V8 Springs for shocks/struts

Good to hear ....my suspension went to mooosh ...it felt like a 1976 Chevy Impala ...just way to soft for this suspension
Yeah I think mine went to crap since I got back home and let the car sit for a few days. It's so loud now on the rear of the car! You should have heard that sucker coming off the ground!! Let's just say I am glad nobody was outside to hear it.

I respectfully disagree... But it might depend on the climate you live in... And/or your driving style.

I pulled this off my LS... And this is what started me on my suspension rebuild. When I went to get some NLA parts from a boneyard... I found another spring with a cracked tail.

Absolutely agree 100% 04’ I have seen many Lincoln LS’s with springs cracked or cracked off at the bottom of the seat....

That was one reason I sprayed wd-40 I knew I was going into an area that had lot's of snow. I did that to help prevent rusting. We don't ever get snow here either so usually that is not a problem for me either.
Ha ha ha ....the only way you’ll EVER prevent road salt from eating your shocks away is spraying several good thick coats of Plasti-dip over them

Well as long as I knew I would be around the salt I think WD-40 was a decent idea cause it does coat it in grease. I knew it was not rust proof but I knew it would help a little bit in the long run. Plus I washed under my car every time it snowed! :p

I’m serious though if you want the new MotorCraft to look new forever when they arrive coat them with plastic-dip ...black will look nice

Oh they will look new for years to come when I am done! No salt around here and I am Clean freak so I will have a car wash pass at the hand wash place and keep it cleaned weekly.

I really need to get down to NC where there is no salt lol

Just went ahead and got the Moog stabilizer links and am sending back the other no name brand that I somehow ordered. So all the suspension parts are mostly Moog now (2 rear upper and 2 rear lower control arms) The of the rear toe links are Delphi but the toe link bushings are Moog. Also bought Moog for the shock mounts that came with the billows and came with new nuts and I bought OEM shocks. So hopefully I am set now!

Should be like it’s straight off the showroom floor with such an extensive suspension refresh..pocket book took a hit but you will have one smooth ride

And Hopefully next month I can get the shocks replaced on the front as well and the sway bars on the front and the front Tie rods. I have to check out the front control arms as well but I can see Jaguar on the upper control arms so maybe they have been replaced before but I will check out the bushings on the upper and lower front and if that all is good I will just replace all the simple stuff and have the car aligned and then it should be good as new on the road. If the bushings on the lower or upper control arms on the front need replacing I will get all that done with moog as well. And within the next 2 months I plan to do the rear differential carrier bearings and change the fluid on the rear and change the wheel bearings for the rear and also plan to replace the front hubs.

Some of the factory parts have Jaguar stamped on them, so you can't go by that for replaced or not.
The front anti-sway bar is a pain to change. On the 1st gen, you should be able to just replace the bushings. On the 2nd gen you have to remove the bar, which means discharging the AC system.

Gotcha good to know! I can say when I saw it on a lift the front control arms had a newer look to them than the ones on the rear but I did not look at them that close to be honest. I will likely buy a new anti-sway bar and have someone that has a lift change it for me. I was planning to have whoever does my front shocks do the other stuff as well. Cause I had read the upper drivers side front control arm is a pain to change as well cause of the Degas bottle and the brake booster.

Does anyone know where I can find replacement springs for the Gen 1 LS? If I could find a set of new springs I think I will go ahead and replace my shocks on the rear while doing the rest of the rear suspension. Also how do you know if you have performance shocks vs the standard motorcraft ones I have a base LS for 2001 so don't know if that will help or not.
Try Rockauto

Yeah... Dealer item only... And they are discontinued... Along with most of the shocks.

Dale, I'm suspect if the Suplex. Might be a German company... But I'll bet they're made in China. Price is too good to be true for something that will last long term. Might be best to check out boneyards for a low milage specimen.

car-part.com You can search by location and distance.

Well thankfully I don't need springs after all! I Was able to inspect everything a bit more when we did the brakes and rotors on all 4 wheels. Had to buy a set of calipers though! Literally both of the olds ones crapped out the same day. One froze up on the way to change my brakes and the other froze up on the way home after changing them. So I went home and got a set of calipers off amazon and they will be here Friday and if early enough Friday I will change them then otherwise changing them Saturday early. And before anyone asks yes I used the special tool on the rear! One was completely locked and the other went back in all the way for easy install on the one that froze on the way home. It made it about 20 miles and then froze so I am sure it was fully compressed. I suspect now that the rear calipers had been hanging up at times the last few months so in a way I am not shocked that it happened. I am sure all that salt from my trip did not help it at all.

Did your LS measure pretty even on all 4 corners? When you do the rear... You may notice it's slightly higher at first... But they will settle in.

I didn't measure cause it seems to be ok and I ran out of time yesterday cause of the caliper issue. That consumed a good part of the day cause of trying to find a part in town. But I will try to once I get my calipers changed out this week.

It's certainly not unheard of for an old caliper to fail just after a brake job. It has to do with it being compressed back to where the piston hasn't been in years, and there's no way around that. It's not uncommon to just replace/rebuild the calipers as a normal part of the brake job.

I do hope that all of the brake fluid was replaced. Seems like it may have had some water in it.

A good bit of it was replaced when bleeding the brakes but I will buy a big bottle of fluid and drain it all. Whats the best method for draining it? I will assume opening up the bleeder till the fluid runs out?

Just take it to the dealer... And for $100 they'll pressure bleed the whole system. All fresh fluid from stem to stern... And no worries about air getting stuck in the ABS actuator.

That's what I do, but you have to do all four (one at a time). That still won't clear what's in the ABS pump.

That's better, and should get it all.
