97 MK VIII, Unit starts fine and runs good cold,as it warms up it starts to what seems to be an ignition miss in drive L2 or L1. Reverse is worst.
Idle in neutral or park ok.Pullled coils one at a time, engine does the expected
and I hear a click, click from plug recess, changed plugs first.I suspect mafs or
more likely trans problem.Unit sat all winter started intermittently.mercon V
used for trans.Any ideas before I ship it to repair shop?

no cel's
when you checked the packs I assume they were not under load
and when your car is in gear the motor is under load
doesn't sound like a trans problem to me

Right, problem occurs at idle in drive,L2 and L1 and also reverse.
Seems to miss out at onset of acceleration up to 15 mph, unit hunts between drive and OD, beyond 35 upshifts to OD and problem disappears, No problems at highway speeds.

I am as clueless as any one man can be!

Gen 2 trans problem maybe

Okay, I went to the autozone and the clever parts guy attached a hand held scanner to the car. He showed it to me and there were two fault codes referencing the O2 sensor and suggested I replace the MAFS?

Any input on this guys

Go back to the parts store and buy some MAF cleaner. It comes in a can and is designed to clean the MAF. You can do this yourself with a little time. Make sure to clean both sides of the wire real good, let it dry and then put the air box back together and don't forget to plug the box back in. Change air filters too while you're in it. should be around $15 to $20 total.

If you buy 02 sensors, stay away from Bosch. They suck right out of the box. Go through rockauto.com for Motorcraft OEM 02's and they have them cheaper than anyone does.
