its 16* outside in Pennsylvania and my peice of :q:q:q:q wont start. I have ngk plugs gapped to .054 already.. could it possibly be the plugs ? I changed them in september at the latest.. Also were is the cheapest place to get the IAC valve, and does anyone think its this. Also before someone says this I USED THE SEARCH and have read the posts about this, but they did not help, its obviously not the plugs were should I look next.. Im guessing it wont throw a code either, and why does this even happen? My mark is begining to bring truth to the horror stories of american cars... I guess i still love it any help please

will i find the iac valve for less than 53 bucks? and are auto lites really that much better than the ngk... the car started this morning when it was 13* out but not now... really a pain in the @ss

dont know what your problem is sorry, but its not all american cars that are crap, just mark8's :). They are ALWAYS the exception to the rule.

Some times the extreme cold can zap a battery causing the car not to start, just a suggestion!!!!!

ha replaced the battery and alternator in august 2 weeks after i bought the car.... stupid peice of ghetto sh*t

slap your self.
Any mercedes or bmw will spend 3 times as much time in the shop as american cars in its life

The only thing i put into my SLK while i had it was a battery in 2 years... 60 bucks... Lincoln, well lets see had it since august - Battery, 2 alternators, wheel speed sensors, idler and tensioner pulley, 2 belts cuz apparantly napa ones are b.s., and it still needs rear upper shock mounts... hmm not too bad for 4 months of owning the car.. Lincoln Mark P.O.S. ......... but seriously i need some help on starting the car, not a war about domestic vs foreign cars even though i knew I was askin for it... come on guys is the only fix to buy a heated garage? Help me out........

"It won't start" isn't really a good description to get diagnostic advice from.

EXCUSE ME????
IM CERTAIN YOU HAVENT LEARNED OR EXPERIANCED LINCOLNS LONG ENOUGH ESPECIALLY THIS KIND BEFORE FOR YOU TO CALL IT A PEICE OF SHIITT, I HAVE A 98' MARK 8 LSC AND I HAVENT HAD THIS PROBLEM,(IM NOT SAYIN I'LL EVER WILL) BUT,I DO HAVE ONE QUESTION...DO YOU PARK UR'S IN THE GARAGE OVER NIGHT, (IF YOU HAVE ONE) OR DO YOU JUST HAVE IT PARKED OUTSIDE IN THE RAW ELEMENTS DURRING THE WINTER?
THESE CARS HAVE SENSORS THAT WEAR OUT,AND PARTS THAT R SENSITIVE TO CLIMATE CHANGES,UNLIKE SOME CAR THAT DONT HAVE AS MUCH SENSORS AND SUCH. THINK OF YOUR SELF BEING OUT IN THE COLD! ( LOL, THEY FEEL TOO) , I PARK MINE IN THE GARAGE AND SO FAR,I HAVENT ENCOUNTERED SUCH ISSUES,(AGAIN NOT SAYIN I'LL EVER WOULD,) BUT MAYBE IT WAS TIME TO MAINTAIN IT AND YOU HAVENT GOTTEN TO IT BEFORE IT GOT THIS FAR.

THANNNNNNNK YOU! ...

It's tough to lend a hand to a guy that thinks his (ours) car is a p.o.s.

That said,

Have you checked the crank sensor for a no-start scenario? It may be that the cold is messing with the connector wire.

The AIT or the CTS (coolant temp sensor) could also be on the fritz. Gen2s have a tendency to flood in cold weather. Weak battery will do it, so will bad plugs in addition to the sensors.

For the time it takes, 15-20 minutes on a COP Gen2, I would change the plugs again. Go with the Autolites. I spent 2 months of my life trying to deal with the under 20 degree problem. Autolites fixed ME up. Not saying that is your problem but for $8.00 at WalMart, why not.

LOL,GEZZZ HOW WOULD I KNOW THAT KIND OF TALK WOULD COME FROM A 20 YR OLD...((((LOL)))) IT'S OBVIOUS YOU HAVENT HAD ENOUGH EXPERI WITH CARS...MY SUGGESTION DRIVE DIFFERENTS CARS FOR YOUR AGE AND KICK AROUND IN IT UNTILL YOU GAIN EXPERIANCE,BEFORE UPGRADING TO A LUX CAR SUCH AS A LINCOLN MARK 8,THESE CARS ARE FOR EXPERIANCED DRIVERS WHO ALREADY KNOWS WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN PURCHASING ONE.THEN YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND HOW TO DEAL WITH ISSUES,WITH OUT CALLING THIS TYPE OF CAR WHICH WAS PROBLY NEGLECTED TO BE MAINTAINED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER, BEFORE YOU GETTING IT, IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT YOU GOT STUCK WITH SOMEONE ELSES PROBLEMS WHICH POSSABLY THEY GAVE UP OR COULNDNT AFFORD TO HANDLE...(WONDER IF HE /SHE WAS A 20 YR OLD ...HEHEHEHE):D

what is the cold cranking amps on your battery? go with a 1000 CCA battery believe me, it is worth every penny! had my mark in NY last year before i moved, car started right up everyday even at 6 in the morn!

can i ask does it star with starting fluid
if so i had a brand new tpi switch that gave me hell told car the thing was half open that was after i replaced the iac valve and accedentlly let iac unpluged and it started right up but well hell now i have a new iac valve

That doesn't matter the extreme cold can still zap even a new battery!!!!!

I didn't once have a dead battery in Michigan, and we went weeks without getting above freezing. I moved here and the battery died when it was 60 degrees out, go figure.

you don't need a heated garage, I drove my Mark all last winter, and in Montreal it gets to be -49....

if the reason gen 2's struggle in the extreme cold is because of flooding.i suggest that until you (we) find the cause you can try starting the car by first holding your gas pedal ALL the way down, then crank over the engine,if it is a flooding problem this should help it start, holding a fuel injected car to the floor turns off the injectors.

like i said ,this might help you till you figure it out, only takes a few seconds to try.

ps.remember to immediately lift your foot of the pedal if it starts, lol

geez everyone takes the comments to heart about the mark here... I like the car alot, and although im 20 im no expert but to say "step back buy a honda for now ur too young" come on get serious.. I dont think anyone who's mark left them to walk 2 miles in 16* weather would have nice things to say about it that day.. that being said sorry if i hurt all your feelings, but i still stand behind what i say the car is an extreme pain in the ass but i still dont want a diff one as of yet.. So sorry to all the lincoln extremest i pissed off... im just lookin for a little help... tried to hold it to the floor did not work.. i just replaced the plugs but i guess im gonna go with some autolite 764's and try.. if not that were should i look next.. IAC sensor about intake?

2 things

It takes two things to make an internal combustion engine run.
1. Fuel (in the correct air fuel ratio)
2. Spark (Delivered at the correct time and strong enough)

So if the car won't start one of these is missing or in the case of the flooded condition, too much. I also live in good old PA and yesterday it was 3, yes 3 degrees when I went out to start my car. My 96 takes a little longer to start in the cold, but it does start. I use an Optima Yellow Top deep cycle, because it never fails. Whether or not you just replaced your battery a few months ago, cold weather will make weak components fail. Just last night I had to jump start a Cadillac in front of the auto parts store. His battery was good, his alternator was good, had spark, and fuel. Also had a bad connection on one of the wires that after it was tightened started on its own.

Check for spark, check for fuel. If both are there, it will start unless the plugs are fouled.

is it such an aweful thought that lincoln made some krappi marks? apparently aggiestckl got one, and so did i
