gen2 peice of SHlT please help

I doubt its the IAC. My 96 started fine with a bad IAC. It would idle up and drop off,idle up and drop off, but not ussually die. Buford is right your missing one or the other. Assuming the car is turning over somewhat at a normal rate.
It is possible you flooded it. Holding the peddle down NOW won't work if the plugs are fuel soaked. When its cold they foul easier I believe and don't dry off over a short period of time like summer. Don't Lose your cool or you'll have more problems. Dead battery, etc.

Mr Wilson, is it at all possible that it is not a crappy Lincoln, but a driver who disrespects his car?? I drive my Lincoln very hard, as do a lot of other drivers on this board. I do not however beat it. I treat my car with utmost respect. When I drive it hard, I drive a few extra miles to make sure that the engine has time to come back down to normal operating temperature, and the brakes have sufficient time to cool. In other word, I do not ride it hard and park it wet. That is for horses and woman. (No offense Debi.)
 
recheck everything, come on calling your car a piece of crap is wrong, you bought your car used the person probly had everything going at once to kill the alt and once the alt is died it dont take long to kill the battery, they got billion dollar space craft that are design by rocket scientist that blow up 3 seconds after launch or wont start. I never rplace my alt till last week, that alt lasted the car 12 years
 
you know it could of been the previous owner totally not giving a crap about it, not fixing that need to be fixed? but just put it this way, once you fix and get things changed, believe me you will not have these problems... unfortuantly you have to drop money on it, which does suck when you have a used car.

I thought your problem was limited to the fact you couldn't figure out how to read the instructive decal explaining out to refill your coolant system? What else is wrong with it?

First things first me being 20 doesnt have anything to do with anything.. Ive done a 350 swap in my s10 so i think ive got some kind of knowledge about cars.. that being said a sbc is no were near as complicated as the one in the mark. Im sorry i dont have all the knowledge on a car i just bought less than 6 mths ago.. Im still learning and I thought thats what this forum was for? When ur car leaves you to walk a few miles when its below 20 and sleat and snow are falling i dont think you would have the greatest things to say about it. Oh and prior owner 60+ with all documentation of work performed on car, all serviced on time and done at Landsdale Lincoln...

All im asking for is some information and not a ball busting contest, I tried the autolite 764 gapped to .054 no success.. I tried to spray starting fluid in the intake, no success.. I really dont feel like taking this to the stealership just yet.. If i get my battery tested what should it be at... Like i said i doubt its the battery cuz with all the cranking its still not dead but i could be wong... If its not the battery, not the plugs, starting fluid doesnt work, whats left?? It took a little while to start it yesterday, then yesterday late afternoon would not start at all.... So any suggestions besides buying a heated garage, buying a honda cuz im 20 and have no were near enough knowledge for my 8 year old lincoln

Dont feel bad for me at all im just telling you why i trashed on the car so bad... I like the mark alot, i bought it over a cadillac sts and an eldorado it just seems to be that its a lemon, ive got a friend who has one and drives like a senior citizen and his still has all kinds of probs, and cuz im young doesnt mean i dont know how to take care of the car or im incompitent. im not tryin to start some kind of war just that it seems the mark could have alot of recalls or updates that could be done..

ANYWAYS FIGURED OUT THE PROB it was the cps i guess cuz i tried to wiggle it and it started right up.. It takes a man to know when he was wrong, sorry if i offended anyone, this site has been nothing but great help and full of great knowledgable people. I read up on a post 94m5 wrote and id like to say that youve contributed alot of great info and would like to thank you for all the step by step help you give day in and day out.. that goes for everyone else, sometimes ones frustrations cause them to lash out.. Being 20 doesnt make u less or more knowledgable last time i checked, im just tryin to learn as I go so bear with me.. Thanks again -Glenn

door handle,air ride,oil filter adapter/coolant inlet gasket are the only problems I have had in 6 years and 60,000 miles, IMO it's far from a piece of crap. probably the most reliable car I have owned. all cars break from time to time,my mom's honda was always in the shop.
 
I don't really think this is helping aggie's situation any, so I'll add my opinion to the mix. Please DO NOT use starting fluid on these engines. (bad things happen in a BIG hurry using ether to kick it over) Get you a set of autolite 764's @ .054, check your fuel pressure, and make sure your batttery is good.


The pump in my 94 is about shot and is a BITCH to start in the morning, and is even worse with the recent cold weather. My 98 starts just fine, I put a set of 764's in it, checked the fuel pressure, and made damned sure the battery and all of the cables were tight. (you may even check the COP boots)

As has been said before, the gen 2's are just a little finikey when it comes to cold weather, and needs to be double checked for winter time. Everyone has trouble now and then, and at times I wish I could talk myself into selling all 3 and buying something new (with a warranty). But then I put my foot down on the throttle, while sitting (on what seems to be) My living room chair.

All cars have problems, please don't resort to thinking of your car as a piece of crap just because you had one. I have owned more german cars than American cars, and let me tell you, a german car is far from being the solution to reliability.

When you have a problem with your car, stand back, take a deep breath, and just think. The answer will usually come to you quite quickly if you have the knowledge you say you do. Most importantly, do preventive maintinence. Old men 60+ don't have a lot of foresight in many occasions. They don't say to themselves "hey, this sensor is old, but pretty important and very easy to replace, let me just take care of this right now and save myself some trouble". Be proactive, especially when it comes to the cold.

You purchased 2 alternators? I'll tell you why, because you bought some piee of crap parts store reman, didn't you? I'm surprised when a reman alternator DOESN'T have to be replaced at least once. Don't bitch if you didn't buy factory and it came out bad.

2 belts from NAPA eh? Knowledge is power. Buy Goodyear Gatorback or go home.

2 batteries? Be honest, did you buy yourself a good battery, or did you buy "the special" or a so-called "Die-Hard"? If you did, again, I'm not surprised you had to purchase a new one shortly after. Optima yellow-tops are your friend. I purchased a yellow top 4 years ago, and used it in 3 different cars. No complaints.

I have owned 5 cars in my life, and would you believe that none of them have ever left me stranded? Know your car, know your parts, and don't cheap out.

Apology accepted too. Now go enjoy what is truly a great car. I've been driving em for over 10 years and count less than 10 repairs after 3 cars and 290,000 miles.
 
Glad to hear you got her running. nothing will make you madder than when it's freezing cold and your car won't start:mad: I have cussed and screamed at some of my other cars for the same thing.

I owned a 97 SLK (hand me down), 2002 Gmc sonoma with a 383 stroker in it, 1997 mark
 
Man, you guy's are funny. However, back to the problem. Does the car try and turn over? Does it make any funny noises? Does the fuel pump prime? When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? You need to find some buddies with some gauges and check for spark and proper fuel pressure. Without some more descriptive descriptions about your problem it makes it hard to help you out especially since none of us are there to witness your problems first hand.

Hey Scott... This Dec. In SW, WI Temps have been above 30 degrees only once and for most days below 20 degrees.. Both of my Mark VIIIs have no problems starting in the cold.

Cranking amps!!! Just because it's a new battery means :q:q:q:q... If you went cheap and bought a battery that can't crank in the cold.

What about your fuel pump? When the fuel pump went on my 93 it just stopped... Wife drove the car to a friends house then went out and it didn't start. It would crank but go fire.

Also - Piece of $hit? You have a car the is almost 10 years old. probably 100,000 miles or close. Wouldn't you think that something might be wearing out?

We all experience problems with our Mark VIII basically for that reason. They are old cars. But if you take care of them replace the worn out parts then they will run as good as new and for many 100,000s miles. My 93 has almost 200,000 miles. I owe nothing on it. Every so often I have to repalce a $100 part sometimes a $300 part. I still pay less to keep her running than I would if I was making payments on a newer car and then also fixing worn out parts.

I have 3 Cars that I would not fret driving across country. All three have over 100,000 miles... Don't call them pieces of $hit!! Any car that could run like they do for that many miles are not a piece of $hit.
 
My car had a bad IAC but it always started. It would die if I didn't keep feathering the gas until it got some heat in the engine though.

BTW I got a new IAC at AutoZone for I think $35 or so? Check out the price online.
