Passing on the highway today i accelerated hard, the car downshifted like its supposed to but then it hung at high rpms way too long before it shifted up. Is this normal, a sign of a transmission going bad, or something a tune could fix?

There is a lag between shifts that is more than noticeable. You will notice this if you have and use SST that you shift a second or two before you want it to shift to make up for it. I think I read that the biggest benefit of getting a tune, Torrie's for example, is that it removes slop, firms up the shifts a little bit.

thanks i was worried it was the trans. glad to hear its just.....slop....i guess.

not going to drop $300 on a tune this time of year. maybe in the spring.

Yea I would check sludge had similar problems. I wouldn't drop that money on it unless you absolutely know it, what's the mileage of the car?

Sludge?

jmtiseo is just saying that the trans has a bit of a lag between shifts (I'm assuming for a more comfortable ride). Nothing about a sludge.

Yeh nothing about sludge. Every vehicle I've been in that's unmodified had a lag between shifts which like nelliott said is probably for comfort. Throw a shift kit or tune in there and you'll be happier with the shifts. Most people driving don't want to get sunk in the seat when she shifts, others would prefer that.

before you buy anything to clean up shift problems try disconnecting battery and following break in procedure in owners manual for a new battery connection. then do a drive cycle to get the tranny to shift how you want it to. its very adaptive the first few drive cycles after a battery disconnect. if i were you i would drive it lightly for a few days to see how soft it can be then disconnect the battery again and drive it hard for a few days to see how hard it can be. you would be shocked how much 'tuning' you can do yourself by simply disconnecting the battery and driving it in a different fashion...

and if you just replaced coils you should definitely do this bc it probably still has the same shift specs from your old coils...
someone posted the drive cycle procedure in a thread not too long ago. i bet you could find it if you went thru my posts bc i know i commented on it. i would do it soon bc it has to be over like 40degrees when you do a drive cycle after a battery disconnect. if you wait much longer you might be looking at spring up in MA.

The coils have about 6 weeks use on them

LMAO I don't think you got that inside joke..

I cant remember, but someone once made a comment along the lines of "Transmission shifts bad? Check the coils.
Suspension seems rough? Check the coils.
etc... "

I just remember laughing so hard!

Actually Luk3, try and pay attention to what your brain is telling your foot to do.
Human nature to begin to ease up on the pedal when one hears the RPM's screaming but the shift doesn't happen just yet.

What could be happening here is, you may think your foot is planted to the floor but as you hear the engine RPM's get so high, a little fear kicks in
and without your full knowledge you might be letting off just a little, and that little is just enough for the shift not to happend just yet.

not trying to blow smoke up your 4ss here, try it out.

I've planted my foot right down to the bottom many of times, and once I felt a hesitation with the upshift.

Strange, so I tried it again and sure enough, she shifted fine, tried to reproduce that effect and what I realized
was that I was looking at the tach and started getting nervous she wasn't shifting into the next gear when I was so close to redlining it.

try sticking your foot right into the floor board and hold it there without letting up, she'll shift, drop down about 1K and keep on screaming into the next gear.

~ just an observation.
