Smoke and Mirrors

Well, after 228,000 miles i think im having my first major issue with my 96 mark. On the way to work a couple of days ago it ran alittle warm...up near the top of the normal range. Turned out the side tank on the radiator broke open and had a matchbox size hole by the outlet. Well i replaced the radiator, topped it off and drove it. At first everything was normal....then it got hot all of a sudden, then went back to normal, and the message center said low coolant. No...the sensor wasn't stuck, and there was no sign of a leak anywhere for that much coolant to be lost. Its also giving a code for a miss in the number 2 cyl. No white smoke out of the pipes, but it does run sluggish(slip of the timing??) So now im thinking head gasket seaping out. I'd gladly take some input on this as well as input on any complications i need to look for if i need to change this. I don't have a rack to put it on but i do have a brand new craftsman compressor and air tools, and a floorjack. is it do-able in the drive way,or do i wanna take it somewhere. And had anyone tackled this or had to pay for it. Is timing the cams again the tricky part? I'll glady take all the advice anyone has to offer. I love the car and i don't wanna get rid of it.
