Help! 02 LS random stalling

After cleaning the MAF last night I was still having subtle idle issues but the car didn't die. I decided to remove the tune and things seem to be better, I did have the idle rpms set higher with the tune when I had the HO aftermarket alternator on to compensate for the lack of output at lower idle rpms.

I'm not sure if that did it but it most definitely seemed to help. Also, I unplugged the MAF and the car stumbled briefly before leveling out and idled fine, when I plugged it back in the car died - is this a sign of a defective MAF?

Would be convenient if that was the issue with idling and possible cause of my lean conditions.

And thanks for the responses so far.

Update:

It has been a few days after switching out the MAF sensor and I haven't had a problem yet. IACV came up empty, but I know it's clean now and I didn't even deal with the TPS.

Just wanted to post so that someone in the future will know what to look for even if MAF issues have been well covered.

Mine was bought on ebay last spring, and when I cleaned and checked it, it was prestine so I didn't think it would be an issue. Changed it with the MAF that was originally on the car (replaced it because the housing mounts were cracked, so I got the tube and MAF assembly on ebay) and all seems well.

Word to the wise, get OEM or reputable aftermarket replacements. And always check the MAF first for any idling/running issues....I just say that because it's five minutes of your time compared to a few hours with the COP's.

Thanks for all the help again guys

Dude... A remanufactured Motor Craft MAF is $160 from RockAuto.com. Wtf expensive?

Others ranged from $70 - $120. Mine was $80 off ebay, and maybe it was a delphi or danco or carter and happened to be a lemon but I'm sure those other units on rockauto are just as good as motorcraft remans....I do agree that $160 is a bit steep.

Look into the engine rattle thread for the 06. Just be glad you don't need a harmonic balancer that is over $700

Hello Broseph,

I recently purchased a 2004 LS that has the same "stalling while idling" issue that you have mentioned in this thread. Were you ever able to identify the actual problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Okay...Needed to click on "Page 2" to read the rest of the thread...duh! Just getting use to the mechanics of the forum.

We'll check into all of these possible issues. THANKS for taking the time to log this detailed thread!!!

Be aware that his is gen I and yours is gen II. For example, yours doesn't have an IAC.

It turned out to be my MAF sensor. Switched the aftermarket back to OEM and haven't had issue since.

I did have a random scare a few months ago when my throttle was stuck on the highway. At first I thought my cruise was on but tapping the brake didn't stop it, and the RPM's were increasing, I attributed that to the throttle plate sticking, but haven't had that issue.

Like joegr said, we have different model years, but both use a MAF sensor. Remove it and check for debris, then clean it with MAF sensor cleaner and see if that helps. Wouldn't hurt to disconnect the battery and reset the engine parameters.

This only now just reminds me, when I first took possession of my 1st GEN, I had noticed that at the top of the MAF, where the four little torq screw hold the top part of the assembly down, one was stripped and would not clasp one of the corners down properly. I simply replaced the entire housing along with a new MAF sensor, although I did not have any stalling out issues, it's something that should be looked at along with all other possibilities of intake air or vacuum leakage.

Caution w/ cleaning of the MAF sensor, it's a fragile delicate little wire, use the correct cleaner.
