Hey guys. Just bought a 2006 lincoln ls. Love the car. But had to replace the gauge cluster lights, and then I notice this little black box, I followed the power wires and they're spliced into my cig lighter. The box has a bunch of other wires but they're not connected to anything? Thought maybe it had to do with the stereo UNTILL I seen them spliced. And I have the MTX with navi in my car. Need help figuring out what this is? Any ideas would be great!

Ummmm..... No MTX for the V8....... Ever.....

I would google thr bar code and see what comes up.

usually stuff that has a "this side up" or a "this side down" label have an antenna that needs to be pointed in a certian direction, like bluetooth modules and GPS tracking systems...

do you perhaps mean that you have the "THX" with nav in your car"

otherwise, MTX doesn't make anything for our cars

MTX, at least the way I'm familiar with, means manual transmission. I didn't even consider THX.......

I leaning toward GPS tracker if it was mounted high under the dash.

could also be a telematics adapter for some aftermarket stuff like a remote start.

then again, it could be anything...

I just figured since he mentioned it specifically with the nav radio, that he just confused THX with the subwoofer company MTX.

also he has a picture showing his automatic transmission in one of the photos so at least WE know he doesn't have a manual...lol

fukc beans, I even just looked at a bunch of google images before posting and that was one of the companies I was looking at, dont know how i missed that... good find.

so now the more important part, who is watching where you are going???

and you will also want to check for other parts of the system being installed elsewhere as that system has the ability to keep the car from running/starting. wouldn't want that malfunctioning and stranding you somewhere...

Its the in-flight data recorder and transponder combo box.....cant believe you all didnt know that. Jeeeez

It's a gps tracker dealer install, no more witness protection program in moms garage when the repo man hunting it down.

used alot by finance companies to track financed cars. could have been from any owner at anytime.. just take it out.

Yes sorry about that, it is the THX NOT MTX. And I don't swipe a key to start it. And what's the purpose of an in flight data collector and how do I use it? None of the other wires are connected just the power wires to my cig lighter.

LMFAOOOOOOO my god I am probably going to get fired now for laughing that hard and spitting coffee all over my monitor at work, thanks Hite...

Tongue was firmly planted in cheek.....

Cut the wire (or remove it) and remove the device. If you cut the wire you'll need to tape it off.

All cars manufactured after a date I don't remember have a data recorder. It records and stores the last XXXX seconds in a continuous loop. There was a driver in New England charged with manslaughter 20ish years ago with "black box" data. She lost control on black ice, hit a tree and her passenger was killed. GM has the most invasive device. They denied the owner of a 'Vette a warranty claim based on the info from the box. He missed a shift and blew the engine........ Owner negligence. You don't use it. Insurance companies, the manufacturer and law enforcement do. I've been meaning to get a notarized letter stating that as I am the owner of the vehicle only I have access to the data and its distribution.

Alternately, he could just unplug the connector from the box. I would still tape over the end of the connector.

Just in case Rob_hall57 is still unclear on this. That black box is absolutely a GPS tracking device. It has the ability to immobilize a car, but yours does not have that wiring connected, so it is just being used for tracking. If you are financing and you remove this box, it will probably be a violation of your financing agreement and could result in a demand that you pay the remainder off right now.

The car (like most) does have a data recorder. That function is in the RCM (Restraints Control Module). That module is in the floor console, just about under the dash. You don't want to remove or disable it though.

I bought the car from a Chevy dealership here in camden alabama. Thanks for all the advice, contacted my bank and they said they do use them but didn't have one out in mine so must have been from a previous owner. It has been removed! Thanks.

If anyone's curious, this site has a link to a list of all cars with event data recorders. They'll be required in all cars sold in the US starting in September, 2014.

^ This!

I don't give a crap about "implementation of 49CFR563" even if I was a US resident. I'd cut that out of the car in a hurry, legal or not. I don't care if it's for good intentions, an invasion of privacy is what that is. Sticking with older cars for now, don't need Big Brother riding along.

Huh? our LS'es already have these?

EDIT:
Seriously ... this is not a transceiver, does not broadcast, does not receive.?
Has to be plugged into or removed to be read?

<HUGE FACEPALM>

"The amount and type of information stored, and the conditions that will cause a crash record to
be created, varies greatly. For the most part, a crash record will consist of approximately five
seconds of pre-impact data that can include vehicle speed, brake application, engine speed,
throttle position and more. A record may also include crash force information
"

I was confused with the OPS tracking device.
Pre crash on board looped data is nothing new.

Better run to the store and get some tin foil for that new hat. Event data recorders document anywhere from 7-5 seconds of data, prior to an accident. They don't record time, date, and have no location functionality. Just vehicle conditions leading up to an accident like throttle/brake position, seat belt use, speed, air bag deployment, etc etc. Its been used extensively in this recent GM recall fiasco. Its extra comical that you are so against them given your profession because they are on a wide variety of commercial motor vehicles, http://www.heavytruckedr.org/documents/PotentialEDRDatabyEngineType.pdf

Also, I would enjoy listening to someone actually try and explain their reasonable expectation of privacy of how they operated a vehicle on a public road 5-7 seconds before a crash. Pedestrians, look away! Do not watch me drive, this is an invasion of my privacy!

I was confused with the GPS tracking element. Thanks for the advice on the new hat Chris!
