Help! New D-shaft Hitting Gas Tank!

Hello. I installed my 4" dynomax driveshaft tonight, and when i turn to the left very slightly it rubs my gas tank and makes a terrible noise. I've dropped the gas tank down and can see where it's rubbing, is there any solution for this? Has anyone else installed a 4" driveshaft and has any clearance issues with the gas tank? Or any issues? I'm wondering if anyone knows what the solution to this is. I'm thinkin about duct taping some 1.5" foam insulation and putting it between the gas tank and the body of the car to provide more space for the driveshaft, and adding washers to where the bolts that hold the straps over the gas tank as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm waiting for some answers to help me out. Thanks alot!! It's appreciated!
 
I'm sure the body has a slight flex, as do all cars. Probably just a hair from the gas tank and when i turn left....yeah...anyways... maybe i positioned the gas tank incorrectly... i don't know... but i need to know if anyone else is running a 4" driveshaft... and if they had any clearance issues.....thanks

the tank may be shifting though. if the trans/engine/diff or subframe mounts are bad it could also allow enough shift to hit the tank.

All bushings are good. Only has 75k on it..... Everything looks fine. But is it touchy how u position the gas tank??
 
I shouldn't have any problems with the 4" driveshaft though should i? It's a direct bolt in...correct?
 
I don't know... I dont remember the OD of my driveshaft from denny's driveshaft. 4 inches sounds a bit too big for an OD though.

I don't know, I hope it's something simple, but SCP, IMHO is not exactly the best guy to go to for aftermarket parts. Call him and buy a set of solid rubber motor mounts. He knows he doesnt have them, but he will take your money. then he'll call you a few days later, and tell you they will be in next week. then next week, and so on, and so forth. No. I don't like Evanoff's business practices. And I don't much care for that self important prick anyways.

Yeah he seems like a prick stick. I don't care much for him either, but the driveshaft isn't his, he just orders it ya know. I don't plan on doing anymore business with him. Anyways.... i think i'm gonna try putting a piece of foam insulation with duct tape around it and glue it to the pads that are on top of the gas tank to provide a little more space in there.
 
I know this might sound a little archaic, but could you just give the tank a slight adjustment with a hammer? Nothing major just enough, it sounds like he only need an inch.
 
theres only one solution... well actually 2. You can either remove the gas tank, or remove the driveshaft... you gotta decide which one you want more
 
Unless you have a poly tank like me. Most Marks have poly, a few have steel (poor bastards). Gen IIs may be all steel, not sure.
 
IIRC, there is enough room to allow you to loosen up the straps and slide the tank over a bit.


I know the car only has 75K, but don't think that the bushings on the diff arent shot. Mileage is'nt the only factor that breaks em down.
 
Well I actually think i incorrectly installed the gas tank. I don't think it was in the right spot. But i took paint sticks and sized them to the pad on top of the gas tank, there's 2 pads so i duct taped these paint sticks together to form another pad and placed them on top of the pads on the tank and installed it, just to give a little extra clearance, but i can easily get 2 fingers in there now. No problems. Only question I have now is, how do i tell if i need to spin my drive shaft around 180 degrees? How much vibration will there be if it needs to be turned 180 degrees? Alot of vibration? Or just a slight vibration but ALOT better than stock? Thanks.

All my bushings looked great. I don't think i would have even had to put those "custom" pads above the gas tank, but i did anyways cuz i REALLY didnt feel like dropping it again. Anyways, it goes good now, 120mph and no vibration, i just had the tired balances, but theres also 44lbs of air in them and there seems to be a very slight vibration, nothing major though, but that could be because my rotors are warped. So does anybody know how bad it'll vibrate if it needs to be spun 180 degrees? Thanks for all the help!

The reason i ordered it from SCP was because it was the cheapest. It was too much the way it was anyways, but I feel like i got a great deal. $400 for an MMC 4" driveshaft, and yes i got a MMC.

Oh i should probably add....SCP must have intentionally sent me a 3.5" driveshaft the first time, which i called him up complaining and they paid for shipping back and shipped the 4" right away. So he was probably thinking i'm just some dumb kid and will never check the size. Could have been a mistake though. O wells...thanks!
