Help removing the Oil Cooler (03 V8)

Im trying to replace the oil cooler in my 2003 V8. I have the new part in hand, but i'm struggling to see how the hell this thing comes off, short of a gigantic allen wrench. Is that what you're supposed to use to get that "bolt" out of the middle of the cooler?

Ill have to make a trip to the store if so, because I don't have any allens close to that big.

Joe linked up the deneau repair guide page and all it says is "remove the bolt" so thats not much help.

Found what I need. Last place I thought would have it, but I figured why not look when I went inside to get a belt. Autozone.

They had ONE of these on the rack, way out of the way behind other sizes. Went to Lowe's, the hardware aisle of Wal-Mart and then gave up. Stopped at AZ on my way back home thinking ill grab the oil and belt and tomorrow figure this thing out. BAM!

1/2" Drive - 17mm Hex Bit Socket (About $10 after tax) from AutoZone in case anyone in the future is having this issue too. I didn't want to remove the whole adapter assembly and then have to replace that gasket too, as im sure i'd have to order it.

Good to know. Even on Amazon, 17mm hex sockets aren't too popular. They're either sold individually at $8+, sold in 3-packs for $15, or large kits for $45+ (cheaper from no-name brands)
 
Yeah, I was really surprised when I came across one that big at AutoZone. Tucked way away so you'd have to look real hard, but they're there.

Figure maybe someone in the future will be in the same predicament and find this thread if they search, but who knows with this boards search function, lol.
 
Hi was it a difficult task to replace the oil cooler? did you have a milky substance in your coolant

Nice find and info on the allen socket... but was a new part really necessary. Seems like a simple 30 cent o-ring would fix the problem, (plus a little vasoline).
 
Getting the large center bolt off my V6 oil cooler was one of the most difficult jobs in my engine removal and teardown project. I think the bolt head is 20mm or similar It is not an allen bolt. I had to buy a long breaker bar to get that sucker to move.
