Well, I guess things were going to good. Something just had to happen..

I searched for hours on here both via the built-in search and by using google, but to no avail. There are also way too many useless topic titles such as "omg help please."

It's a 2003 V8, with zero previous issues (according to OASIS).

I did 4000rpm in 2nd gear on wednesday, going up hill. The car felt very unusual afterward. I almost thought I had busted something.

As I stopped at a red light, I felt a fairly strong shake/stutter/vibration as if it were transferred from the back to the front of the car. RPM dropped from the usual 750-800 by about 100-200. This repeated itself 2 or 3 times at irregular intervals. Might I also add, I believe this does not happen when in P or N, only when in gear, but I don't want to spend 20 min each to really find out. The problem is also intermittent - it doesn't always happen when I'm stopped.

I immediately visually inspected the car when I got home. Zero leaks, nothing seems broken, but I am no mechanic. There is also no CEL.

On thursday it happened again, but to a much lesser magnitude. The vibrations seem to be much smaller now. I pulled the MAF, cleaned it, reset the battery and I let the car idle for about 20 min. Went for a ride, all seemed OK apart from how unusual the car felt. The car now idles at around 650-700 RPM.

Yesterday the vibration occurred about 2 or 3 times on my way from work, again only when stopped. Coincidence has it that just as I was letting go off the brake when a green light came on, it happened again, but stopped as soon as I let go off the brake pedal. Hmm..

Turning the A/C, stereo, etc. off also does not seem to make a difference.

The car is regularly maintained. Oil + filter change every 5k km.

I am thinking it's perhaps some idle control, or a sensor of some sort. Perhaps even an injector problem?

On a seemingly unrelated note, since a while back, I've been having a similar stutter/RPM drop only when on cruise control doing 60km/h (37mph). The RPM would drop by about 500. Again, this didn't always happen. The only times it did, was at work (military base), at that exact speed.

ATM, the car is at the dealer getting diagnosed. They will take it for a spin as there's no CEL, and said there might not be any codes. I am hoping it's a coil so that they fix it for free.

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

when my coils started going out, i was at a friends house backing out of the driveway and my car dropped to about 100-200 rpms and almost stalled, when that happened i also got a check engine light for an O2 sensor, after about a week i started to get a misfire, replaced the coils, and it fixed it

I'd bet on coil problems too. It sounds like you are past due for it anyway.

Wouldn't a bad coil problem produce a more constant problem?

Anyway, so far I've got nothing from the dealer but frustration: After 7h, the car didn't even move since I parked it there. The service guy booked me for an already very busy day, so they didn't even have the chance get to me. What a moron...

I took the car for a spin today for a round trip. City driving on the way there, and I took the freeway on the way back, with zero issues, but the car seems to vibrate slightly more during idle, just like it has when I first got it. Could this be because it now idles at lower RPM?

Joe, how much of a misfire, and for what duration, does it take to inflict any damage to the cats?

Marginal coils are not constant. That's what makes them hard to diagnose.
It doesn't take much of a misfire, it just has to do it for long enough to cause cat damage. I don't know how long that is.

I see, thanks.

Will they be able to pick up a marginal coil during their testing? I've been told there's more to it than just plugging the car into a computer and pulling codes.

If they do the factory required stress testing, then they should.

man i had the same issue, after a good look noticed one of the injector plugs had worked its way slightly off. from bumps and such i guess. anyways worth a look

Where are the plugs located? I am assuming they will be way below the coil covers.

I tried looking here but couldn't find anything.

Edit: Found it.

Item 5 is the fuel injector plug. There's one per injector, one injector per cylinder. You need to pull the top cover off, but there is no need to remove the coil covers.

Edit: Sorry, I guess I need new glasses. It's item 5, not 6.

Under the coils......

Oh, I thought he was asking about the plugs (connectors) to the fuel injectors that the post above it mentioned to check. It didn't occur to me that someone would have trouble finding the spark plugs. Sorry...

Actually, I was asking about the fuel injector connectors. Sorry for the confusion.

Anyway, it's quite tight in that area. I only managed to press down on them using 1 finger. None of the connectors seemed to be off. The injector furthest from the bumper, driver side, did seem quite loose though.

To add, the suspected misfire only seems to occur once the car has fully warmed up, after ~20min of highway driving. It only happened once today.

Well the dealer just called. It's coil #8, which is gonna be replaced for free w/o a diagnostics charge.

I also told them to go ahead and just change all the spark plugs out, as I don't have the time to do them myself.

if its possible, you might want to do all the cop's too (if they are willing of course)

They said no. I suppose they will be seeing me 7 more times sooner or later :)

Thank you everyone for your help. The car feels great now!

Na. The 100K mile warranty will run out before all of them fail.

Here's a random thought I just had: Since #8 is closest to the wiper motors, perhaps I have a leaky wiper motor gasket (covered under 07N09).

I think that they have to see evidence of water caused corrosion on the COPs or plugs before they will replace the gasket. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to suggest it to them next time.
