My car, to start off is a 1995 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC with the 4.8L V8 32 Valve engine...

Here's the story, my alternator went so I got it rebuilt (stupid expensive eclipse alternator..). Anyway, while it was getting repaired I lost my car keys, called in to get a new set and they told me I couldn't order keys for 95' and under and that I had to order a whole cylinder with keys to install.

I ordered it, drilled my old cylinder right out and popped the new one in, tried to start it and got nothing, not a click (except for under the fuse box under the hood).

After seeing that happen I jumped the solenoid to see if it would work and sure enough, it started, which made me think my solenoid all of a sudden went. I went to Advanced Auto and picked up a new one (it mounts on the starter by the way on mine) and installed it.

What happens now is that when I attach my battery terminals it pulls power right away, almost melts the terminals to nothing and the starter starts spinning on nothing.

Any guru's feel free to figure this out. Thanks.

You've got some wires hooked up wrong, or something is shorting out. When you replaced the ign. cylinder did all the wires connected to the new one get hooked back up properly? and does the new cylinder engage the linkage to the start switch?

The ignition cylinder has no wires to worry about. All it was was drill out, pop the pin, pull it out, and put the new one in. There is one sensor that hooks up that's attached to the cylinder but it aligns by itself basically, there's only 1 way to get the cylinder to fully fit in, and it's in.

I've been told it might be that I have to reset my computer after doing any work like that and that I might have blown my ignition computer. I had no idea I had an ignition computer.

It might also be a faulty solenoid, so I'll go buy a new one just incasel.

Thanks for the info so far, I'll keep checking it out.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, because I really am not one, but didn't ALL mark VIII's come with the 4.6L Mill? If so, why do Mark VIII owners have to specify to other MArk VIII owners what size engine their car has?

I see your post say's 4.8L I don't know if it's a typo, howevr I am pretty sure the Marks Never came with a 4.8????

Sorry if I annoyed anyone.

Yes, you caught a typo. It's 4.6L. I just felt like specifying I suppose.

Nobody got a clue or had this prob? No prob, I'll probably end up taking it in, some computer can figure out how in God's name I'll be able to fix my car.

I've pulled my entire steering column out and put it back without any "computer problems", so I don't see how just changing the lock cylinder would cause any problems like that.

If you turn the key and strange things happen the first thing I'd check would be the ign. switch.
