i dont know old planes well but this plane flew over my shop 3 times today and this was the best pic i could get, this puppy was old, planes fly over all the time but i knew this was something very strange when i heard the motors on it, so i ran out the door and looked up, it is deff a vintage aircraft, was painted flat olive army green and had a bunch of writing on it but i couldnt read any of it. i loved it, you dont see planes like this in the sky these days. anyone know what it is, chad???

WIth 4 engines and the twin vertical stabilizers, it's a B-24 Liberator. The B-25 Mitchell had that tail configuration, but it had two engines, not four. The B-29 Superfortress (and B-50, which is the same airframe with different engines) has a single vertical stabilizer.
This is a B-29:

You were privileged to see this in flight as it would appear that there are only 3 still airworthy. It must have sounded magnificent.

wow really? yes the sound is what made me run out the door, i knew it was not something that would normally fly by, awesome sound and it was very low, had i heard it coming i would have snapped a few with the X10 zoom on the camera, maybe it will be around tomorrow again, it flew by 3 times, i dont know why its flying around unless there is something going on around the clearwater area this weekend.

Jamie look at some of the news websites or local papers. That airplane from the collings foundation, along with a B-17 flying fortress and an early birdcage type p-51 mustang are in town this weekend. They are doing ground tours and training flights, if you have some money lying around.

lol see what happens when you have no spare time, i could have found out why they are here lol i knew there would be a reason. thats cool!

didn't ford make the B-24?
Yep, Ford built a bunch of them at Willow Run. They weren't the only B-24 manufacturer, but they produced more than anyone else; at peak capacity, Ford produced more than 400 B-24s per month. I don't remember if it was the most numerous aircraft we produced during WWII or just the most numerous bomber, but at over 18,000 produced, it's kind of amazing that only three are left flying...

Wow I thought I was the only WWII fighter/bomber buff still around.

Well done, guys...

i to am a buff, i think that our love for cars naturally transcends to these beautiful planes. especially the old ones that don't fly at a million miles up at 700 mph

WW deuce

Good job guys on the ID. I'd be all over a flight in any of those planes.
Acouple of years ago in Wichita, I walked out of a custome's plant next to the old airport and heard a prop job coming over, looked up and saw a Zero. Ran to the car, drove over to the airport. The guy had landed the plane and it turns out it was an old Navy trainer painted up like a Zero for the movie "Tora-tora-tora". He still uses it for WWII dogfights at airshows.

A book I read as a kid - Great American Fighter Pilots of World War II. By William Shirer.

Great book.

always been a airplane buff, always been around planes one way or another. flew control line (like RC but not) for my entire life till i got my drivers license. i was a national champion in my event for many years. kinda starting to mess with it again

In the 80's when Dyess Air Force Base got their first B-1 bomber they had a big ceromony and the Confederate Air Force was there, and with them were all the old bombers from WW2. It was a sight to see all those old bombers flying i'll never forget it.

Yeah, jets are impressive, but there's nothing like the sound of a piston-powered warbird flying overhead.

I was at an airshow back in the '90s, and I still remember the sound of Whistling Death (what the Japanese called the Corsair) roaring over the field. I was also lucky enough to be on the tarmac while the crew was firing up the B-17. I was straight ahead of her nose, watching those big radial engines fire up one at a time... that was good stuff...

Radials are ok, but I have to say there's "nothing" like the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin.

ALL those old planes are great.
We live about 1 mile from the threshold at Ellington Airforce Base and these old war birds are flying in and out of their all the time.

I love the sounds of the old radial engines, but my OH SO FAVORITE is the Allisons from the '51's and the supercharged versions in the '38's

One of the old tow boats I worked on had a V-12 allison in it's bow thruster with twin Superchargers, one driven by the front of the crank and one driven from the rear.

Love the old piston engines!!!!

They don't call them the good ole days for nothin, right? One of my dream lives would to have been a WWII Mustang pilot.

there is some great gun cam footage on youtube.

I really really like the 51's the corsairs and of course the twin engined lightning.

I'd dang sure love to own any of those three planes.

We've got a flock of those "fake Zekes" flying around here as well.
