IT IS GOOD TO BE BACK IN A CONTINENTAL! - Steering Wheel Question

After a streak of about 15 months without my 2000 Continental I knew I made a mistake trading her off. When my 2nd car left me in a bind it wasn't a thought what kind of car I was going to get next, even though Cadillac is my Number 1 car, the N* is the worst engine design I have ever owned and will not own another Caddy with that engine.

Shortly after test driving the '99 Continental, I realized that my 2000 had every option available and this 99 seems kind of plain... The one thing I am going to miss most is the ride quality, I was definitely a SOFT ride kind of guy- but I can't do anything about that now. My question is, can I change my steering wheel with just the cruise control options with one from a Conti with the radio and climate control options? I would imagine I would have to change a clock spring inside and maybe - HOPEFULLY- plug the wires in somewhere? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'll try to look at my electrical manual to see what happens after the clockspring. I don't know what kind of detail it gives or where you'd find the harnesses if needed. It could get expensive!

With your comment about the ride, I assume the 99 doesn't have the suspension adjustment option?

I bought mine because it had most of what I was looking for -- driver selection / suspension / steering choices, with center console shift, but I still wish it had a sunroof! My next addition will be heated seats since aftermarket options aren't too expensive and they seem to be well made.

The 99 came with the suspension upgrade but only as an option- 1 of which this car didn't come with. I haven't found any option available that my car came with. If it wasn't in such great condition I would 'throw it in the gutter and go buy another'

j/k, she is far to beautiful for that. Besides, it looks like she was pre-wired for the rear amp in the back and possibly the steering wheel controls- maybe even more. I plan on buying a steering wheel and clock spring (i believe mine is bad, airbag code 36) then see if the controls work. obviously I would confirm they worked for actually bolting the steering wheel in.
 
ive done that swap in my conti( and added the black newer lincoln logo while i was in there), the radio & cruise control buttons work, but the a/c/ heat/fan buttons dont do anything. i also got the clock spring, it was the same number of wires at the same pins, just different colors, a/c/heat/etc controls dont work with either clock spring. im wondering if i need a newer ATC head or my controls are bad or the wiring isnt there. i'd be real interested in hearing how the swap goes.

hell yeah! I just found that the car is already prewired for an amp in the back so I will be pulling one of those when I pull the steering wheel. i will probably pull the climate control unit out and see if it has another plug in the back of it for the steering wheel control. i am getting excited now and I may have to change my plans for Sunday now.
 
In my experience the amplifier (at least in the Alpine setup) powers just the rear deck-mounted woofers. The rest of the speakers are powered directly by the radio. It's nowhere near as good as the JBL system in the older Contis or Town Cars.

I have a spare tan steering wheel with all the controls. I'd rate it at 95 out of 100 condition. I removed it only because I got a wheel with the wood trim.

yea the JBL system in my 98 is pretty good for a factory setup.
 
I just picked up an amp and steering wheel today. I had some RF i pulled out of my Buick and hooked them all up, the wiring had to be added from the harness plug on the back of tje rear seats- real easy to do. Pull the red tab inside and install them in the same pin you pull them out of. I pulled the whole plug from the car and cut the wires i didnt need. Put the new wheel on and hooked up my PAC-RC from my last Conti to control my Pioneer head unit and eveything worked out except for the hvac like posted before. I did research while at the boneyard and found the cars with steering wheel controls had another wire behind the hvac control unit. I added the wire and brought it up to the clockspring plug but i couldnt figure out where to put it/connect it. I need to research it some. Of course i delayed what i really needed to do today and did it at the end and let me tell you- the altenators in these cars are a PAIN IN THE @$$ to change.
 
Climate Conttols on Steering Wheel

I just figured out the steering control wiring for the fan and temp adjustment on the conversion! One step closer to what I want out of my Conti. What I really want is the ride adjustment so I will be researching that next.
 
Is the wiring mod something you could post, or maybe the page(s) of a manual to look in? It may help those who find this thread by searching later on!
 
I was going to make a write up on it when I had a few minutes to sit down, the reason I havent yet is because I lost my cruise control and that my friend is unacceptable! I will sacrifice the fan and temp over the cruise. But I am not done yet so bare with me- i promise I will have something shortly:D

I cant figure out why the cruise didnt work, maybe i didnt have the plug connected all the way. All i did today was unplug and replug the 2 plugs to the clockspring; the one in the swheel and under the column. Everything works and I am Happy Happy Happy
