That's because they make more money more often that way.
Times and technology have changed. Just like the combination of today's engines and today's oils make it where 5K to 12K oil changes are okay (instead of 2-3K), some transmissions with synthetic fluid can go much longer than 30K. The factory interval is 150K. I change at about 75K, just in case.
Ford, BMW, and many others are trying to reduce Maintenance Induced Failures by reducing the frequency of required maintenance.
