So, the other day I went over to Meineke and had a $97.00 exhaust done. I was tired of how quite and blan the tone was so I needed a quick job. The guy left the Cad. Coverters on and the one center muffler. He cut off the two resonators in back and replaced them with some glass paks. Now I've never been a big fan of glass paks because I don't want to sound like an old farm truck, but surprisingly enough these actually give a nice tone. The exhaust still isn't quit loud enough for me, what would happen if I was to remove that one center muffler? Or, do you guys have any other ideas?

its not a muffler its a cat, then there is a resonator, then 2 mufflers at the back

I read about people who remove their 3rd cat often, and have no problems with the sound. Doing so will eliminate some back-pressure.

Oh, ok so if I was to remove that cat would it make the exhaust way to loud?

Bear in mind that you have a 281 cid engine. You are not going to make a lot of "racket" or be "loud". A few GenI members on this board have removed the mufflers altogether and enjoy the sound the car makes.

You could remove all mufflers and drive around, see if any resonance disturbs you. Cut out the mufflers and slip in some pipe and clamp it in place to test out the tone and pitch. If you don't like it, you can add your favorite muffler type as you wish, dialing the sound as you go.

I took the exhaust of my GenII LSC. From the factory, I can remove the back half of my exhaust at will, as it is fastened with clamps. I was surprised at how the car sounded. Muscular not brash and loud. That is to my taste though.

i have true dual exhaust, removed 3rd cat and res. and glasspacks. its loud, but not cop trouble loud.

Removing Cats does not help back pressure nor is back pressure something you want to eliminate on a stock vehicle

tell that to my 03 cobra. its deafening at WOT.

another friend has an 03 GT, stock manifolds, no cats, x-pipe magnaflow catback with magnapacks...extremely loud.

engine size doesnt have much to do with loudness. just tone. look at all the 1.6 liter hondas running around.

Ok, Mr. '03 Mustang; You push more air out of your exhaust than a stock Mark VIII and will be louder. You are supercharged and according to Wikipedia; "A supercharger (also known as a blower) is an air compressor used to force more air (and hence more oxygen) into the combustion chamber(s) of an internal combustion engine than can be achieved with ambient conditions atmospheric pressure.
The additional mass of oxygen-containing air that is forced into the engine improves on its volumetric efficiency which allows it to burn more fuel in a given cycle - which in turn makes it produce more power.."
With all due respect, your owner ought to know this, as he is an ace mechanic.

You have taken out the cats that would tone down the note and an X-pipe increase the exhaust note even higher. (Double hit for higher pitch). Mark VIIIs have a few feet more tubing in the exhaust system, thus a slightly lower pitch.

From Wikipedia;
Loudness is the quality of a sound that is the primary psychological correlate of physical intensity. Loudness, a subjective measure, is often confused with objective measures of sound intensity such as decibels. Filters such as A-weighting attempt to adjust intensity measurements to correspond to loudness as perceived by the average human. However, true perceived loudness varies from person to person and cannot be measured this way.

Tone may refer to:

In music:

* Pitch (music), the perceived frequency of a note or sound (see also pure tone)

My SBC 350, 5.7l through open exhaust is louder than my Linc. 281, 4.6l. You can ask my neighbors. Outside measureing the dbs. for a scientific approach. Arguing over this gut feeling is fruitless. See above definitions.
Hondas and like ricers have that higher pitch that makes them annoying from less air presssure(4cyl.) being pushed through a large "coffee can muffler", sounding off that nasty, raspy, resonance ridden tone. As oppossed to an 8cyl. through a smaller pipe, resulting in a deeper tone.

All in all, WOT is for a brief moment in time. IMHO, early a.m. initial engine start up for neighbor sake and cruise RPM maybe the better considerations for overall exhaust tone set-ups. As stated above, sound is subjective to the end user and ultimately decided by that user.

i figured you would come back with the cobra having a blower.

how about we get a DB meter? according to a bunch of friends my cobra WITH MUFFLERS is louder than a friends 02 trans am withOUT mufflers.

he also is blown.
