Just installed aftermarket HID's on both Marks.

The bolt is little but it is about an inch long and why, idk but it is. It's not bolted to anything thicker than a 1/4 of an inch.

Because Ford.

Also, as far as color issues with aftermarket HIDs, we're pretty much all going to get the same :q:q:q:qty bulbs from the same :q:q:q:qty factory in the same :q:q:q:qty rather-populous-Asian country. None of them are going to be exactly the same, none of them are going to last as long as a decent bulb, but none of them are going to run you $80 to replace the bulb either. It's a compromise you make, or it's one you refuse, and if you refuse you're buying Philips, Sylvania, or GE bulbs - bulbs that each cost more than the entire HID kit you bought in the first place.

This is coming from someone who just shelled out about 2 DDM Tuning kits worth of money for a pair of D2S bulbs for his Saturn... Forgive me if I'm a bit bitter at the moment.

I just saw on here that someone made it so there low beams were always on... How would you do that? I live out in the country and its very dark. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

BTW. My car is a 1996 mark viii if that helps

1st & foremost, welcome to the forum... Introduce yourself, tell us a bit about your car.

As for making your lights turn on permanent? Cover the photocell sensor on the passenger side dash & they will stay on all the time. Something as simple as a small cap, electrical tape, paint, etc...

when you did the gen 2, did you leave the factory hid's and change the high beam to 8k,or did yoy leave the high alone? i was thinking of several different options for my headlamps, including projectors for both lo and hi, but since the hid's work fine i might just change the hi out to ptojectors. what exactly did you do and did you remove the hid chrome reflector cover that looks like a mushroom? details....

The mushroom thing you are referring to is the refractor. You never wanna remove that or you'll be blinding everyone. Gen 1 is different than Gen 2 but people have asked that same question about Gen 1 low beams that have the refractor and the HID housings also have one and it too is chrome if you're looking at it from the front and has a Lincoln emblem stamped into it. Mine are halogen housings but were new out of the box right at 2 years ago. I have a close up pic of the refractor but that's something you never want to remove. On halogen housings, it can't even be seen unless you're looking at it up this close.

On HID housings, they had to make them chrome because they could be seen easily from the outside of the car. They had to make them look good so the Gen 1 has a square one with the emblem stamped on it and the Gen 2 is a completely different style all together. A lot bigger so they gave them the mushroom look, as you call it.

About me

I just got a 96 mark viii with the air bags shot, so i did the coil over conversion on it. It is pearl white and bone stock. I just ordered 5000k HID lows, and Highs will be coming soon... I have been using your guys info on working on this car, This place is great.

The question i was actually asking was to keep the lows on all the time, so when the lows on are the highs are off, but when the highs are on the high and lows are on.

a relay kit, got mine from ebay a few years ago.

or there is some wire splicing you can do in the multi function switch area. there is a write up around here somewhere.

The multi-function switch has pins that need to be connected. Mine was done 2 years ago. I forget what pin numbers they were but it's on here somewhere.

There used to be a sticky about polishing and rechroming the gen1 housings and installing HID's. I can't remember who started it, but it had all the info on which wires to cross, cut, splice, etc.

HID conversion w/ lows always on

Guys I found this and thought I would re post it.

"FYI: HID conversion w/ lows always on"

Hey everybody,

I did the HID conversion on my 95 this weekend. For any of you who's interested, I found an easy way to keep the lo beams on when switching to high to make the HIDs last longer.
Here's the procedure:

Remove the upper steering column cover by taking out the ignition lock cylinder and four screws. The lower part of the cover will also come loose.
Then, locate the two torx screws holding the multifunction lever switch and unfasten them. (Torx-20)
You will find two connectors on the multifunction switch. The smaller one has two rows of pins, one with three and one with four. On one end of the four pin side, you will find a red/black and a red/yellow wire, contact numbers 13 and 15, splice number 270 if I recall correctly.
Just connect these two terminals with a suitable piece of wire and you're done. No relays, almost no extra wiring, no hassle, no computer interference.
Repeat the above steps in reverse order to reinstall.
Headlamps will function normally except for the fact that lows stay on when switched to hi beam. Flash-to-pass is unaffected.
The only problem is that the computer still tells me to "check exterior lamps". I'm working on it.

but most of the hid kits ive seen dont have refractors, or theyre in a projector.you say 6k low and 10k hi did the high come with refractor, or r u using projectors?

The refractor itself is made into the housing. It's not going to move unless you cut the housing open and remove it. Not sure about Gen 2's but on a Gen 1, the high beam has no refractor. Only the low beam and should be the same for the Gen 2

I have different sets of bulbs to play with because they're cheap. Right now I have 6K low and 10K high. I have some 12K in a box and some 6K in a box. 12K is almost Barney purple. I took these out ASAP!
