Knocking at startup, only at startup

I think the rotors are ok. I do not have any shaking in the steering wheel and no pulsating in the brake pedal. Im just gonna change out the other hub. I think I think I found the problem today. I pulled the coil/ plug cover. There is oil in one of the plug wells most likely suggesting that the valve cover gaskets are going. I now have something to do on thanksgiving. I am ordering the felpro set from rockauto tonight. I am ordering the new hub tonight also. I will see by thanksgiving if this works. Here's hoping.

I just replaced the drivers side front hub. The rotational problem is still there. Although I do not have any steering vibration or brake pedal vibration, can my front brake rotors still be warping? They are not aftermarket, but the original rotors that came with the car. The noise is gradually getting worse. I have looked everything over once again and could not find out what the problem is.

It could probably use new rotors anyway but can you see abnormal pad wear or a spot of wear on the rotor.. also, they could be heat checked or warped.. an easy way if your short on cash is to have them turned (put on a lathe) and that's pretty cheap

+1

I agree, you can have them turned if they are not worn beyond the limits. Yes they can warp when they get worn out. The price on new rotors is not that bad if you shop around.

Changed out valve cover gaskets today. Wasnt too bad. i did not find any slack in the timing chain and also i did not see any signs of cracks on the guides. I took a long time looking at those guides and tensioners to try and see a problem. The knocking problem is still not fixed. It did stop it for the first start though. Would a bad coil do this? I bought a few coils but i did not change any out yet since i am trying to identify this problem without breaking the bank.

I also read on here about a post made by jetech that the idler pulley has caused problems like this. Anybody else have any problems like this?

coils/plugs

Got brand new platinum plugs. when i changed them out i did notice some hilljack idiot changed out only a few of the plugs before, not all of them. I did the autolite plugs. they were gapped perfectly from the factory. I will change out the coils near where the sound is coming from and I will post back tomorrow. Thanks Lincoln Jealous.

...process of elimination, i would check/replace the coils, rubber boots, any sign of wear/tear or corrosion, gaps, connectors, harnesses. these coils remind me of a gas grill...you hit the ignition switch for the spark but sometimes it takes a few pushes, those misfires can create alot of stress

Replaced coils. Runs good now. I am going to have the rotors on the front turned to see if the rotating problem has to do with it. I would have bought new rotors but these ones on it now do not rust and look like a mirror where the contact is made with the pad.

Just got the rotors cut. They were not the problem. I am going to road force balance the tires tomorrow. Any other ideas?

This is what I thought it could be, but I had that replaced and it didn't help. It helped with the knocks/rattles it was causing, but the occasional startup knock is still there.

Seriously, the replacement of all the coils cured the problem. Nobody is bull:q:q:q:qting you when they say change your coils. I changed all of them. My car now sounds like it should have a long time ago. I bought the $109 kit off of ebay. They have a lifetime warranty.

hope they last you, coils/plugs is always the answer lol

This car is starting to get on my nerves. Now I have another startup problem. When I start the car it makes a weird clicking noise that is obviously coming from the belt drive. It clicks after about every second for ten seconds and then stops. No check engine lights of anything. Car runs fine except for a bad coil when I just had replaced all of them about a month ago. I am lost on where this is coming from. The drive belt is squeeling a little bit. I am lost and need help with this one.

Is it glazed? Time to replace it anyway if you haven't in awhile and it's glazed..

I know the sound is not coming from the coil problem. That is a totally different sound. Its on the belt drive for sure and I can feel it when it clicks in the car. It has been cold up here and I have snow on my car. Is there anyway that ice could develop on the belt drive due to this snow melting and then freezing as ice after cooldown?

Uhh, I have never heard of that.. If it continually happens I would guess not.. I would try a new belt if yours is squacking

Time for the old tube-in-the-ear trick. Listen at different points to isolate. Could be a pump going bad, A/C clutch, idler, etc.

I've got the same issue with mine. Just started on my 05. Check engine light came on when I bought it... took to have it obdII and come up with timing chain, or needs timing adjustment, or starter seloniod is bad...

Please post the exact OBDII codes, not what the auto store guys think they mean.
