Is there any seals or gaskets that need to be replaced overtime on the Oil Filter mount that has the cooler lines? My one mechanic today noticed a very very small leak coming from that area but didn't notice any visible cracks. He checked to make sure the valve cover gaskets were not leaking again and that appeared to be fine. I have not had to add any oil but I obviously want to correct this issue before it gets any worse.

I will guess that it is your timing cover gasket, but it could be the oil filter adapter gasket, or the gasket between the adapter and the cooler, or the front crankshaft seal.

Thanks @joegr Does the timing cover gasket basically require you to do the timing chain? (What I mean is would I be dumb not to do the timing chain replacement and stuff while I'm in there if the leak is indeed coming from that area) I am going to drive it to town tomorrow and see if I can find a few shops to take a look. I am hoping for the best case scenario on this one but likely will be a worst case scenario with my given luck with things. Also had noticed some burning of oil when sitting still for a while or when I get out after the car has ran for a while.

It doesn't require it, but it is possible to do it. Just getting the cover off and back on is probably more than half the work of changing the chains and tensioners.

Thanks, I kinda figured that would be the case if that is my problem. Being that it is a Gen 1 and if that has to be done I think then I would be foolish not to replace the timing stuff as well. I guess I am hoping for any of the other things to be wrong that you listed and not the timing cover!

I don't blame you, and I hope so for you too. For both of mine, I eliminated the other possibilities, so I am left with the timing cover gasket. I can't justify the effort to myself to change them, so for now I am doing my best to ignore it.

If it ends up being that only I will likely try to ignore it as well because of the fact I am still not having to add oil and I am not seeing any on the driveway so far. If it is timing gaskets could a bottle of the ATV reseal stuff help out?

I just talked with the mechanic again once I had time to process all this crap and he said that he did not think it was the timing gasket or the crankshaft area cause he said that area is nice and dry. But he said say he thought it was the oil filter mount or pressure unit or switch (I think that is what he called it) that is nearby. Do you happen to know of a place to get the mount at cause if I am not mistaken they are discontinued as I know I ran into a similar issue on the 2006 LS I used have with the same part. I know I can always go to the junk yard and find something to make it work as that was what we had to do on my 06 (Thankfully both of my mechanics also are welders that do frame work) But I am trying to stay stock if I can if the price is not insane on finding it new.

You can still get the gasket, but the gen 1 adapter itself appears to be gone, XW4Z-6881-BG.
The gen 2 adapter is apparently still available, 3W4Z-6881-AAA. Ford says it's not for gen 1, but other sites say it fits. I don't know why it wouldn't. Hope he is correct. That would be a much easier/cheaper fix.

Do the gaskets typically fail more often than the mounts ? I want to say there could be some kinda difference as if my memory serves me correct. I took one off my 02 LS v8 before I junked it and I think it would not fit on the 06. I am looking hard all over my house right now to see if I still have that spare one. I know there was some kinda difference, did some of the v8s not have the cooler part on it?

Also kinda confused as part number 3W4Z-6881-AAA.
This part fits the vehicle you selected:

2001 Lincoln LS

8 Cyl 3.9L DOHC EFI NA

The vehicle options this part fits:

  • Fit Note: Less Engine Oil Cooler
  • Production Date: 07/2000-11/2002
3W4Z-6881-AAA - Ford Parts Giant

Does this hook up to the cooler? Or is there a mount I guess that has it made into it.

I would expect the gasket to fail eventually (that may or may not take 20+ years). I really wouldn't expect the adapter to ever fail.
Non-sport gen 1 had no oil-to-water cooler, but it could be added. I think the note about "Less Engine Oil Cooler" just means that the adapter does not include the cooler (they sold them with the cooler for a while). You can still remove the threaded pipe for the oil filter, and replace it with the one for the oil cooler and use your existing cooler. Also, if worse came to worse, you could loop the water hoses together (or replace the lower radiator hose with the non-cooler one), and go without the cooler. I don't think it really makes a lot of difference most of the time.

Oh ok gotcha thanks for the info I will just prepare for my next oil change early and go ahead and grab the gaskets. I see the one that looks like a 8 is there another gasket that it will need as well? Cause I will likely find a used adaptor in the end if I need one, and getting new gaskets has to be a good thing on a used part like that. Also when you say non sport version you are referring to the one without the manual gear selector along with the automatic right? Cause if so mine has the manual and auto.

There is the gasket between the adapter and the oil-to-water cooler, if you plan to replace the adapter or to disassemble it.

Do you know the part numbers to them so I can grab the correct ones? Many thanks in advance.
I see
Ford Part No.: XW4Z-6840-AA
Which other ones do I need?

Sorry, I don't know offhand. I'm pretty sure Ford doesn't sell the gasket between the cooler and the adapter anymore. You may have to go to Jaguar for that, and you may have to buy the cooler to get it.

Gotcha I will check into that then. Till then I got the Felpro one for the one that looks like a figure 8 and grabbed a oem oil filter. Now all I have to do hopefully is grab another 5 quarts of castrol edge (already have a partial bottle) and that last gasket and then I can put it on jack stands and hopefully swap them gaskets out.
Is the other gasket an actual gasket or more of a o-ring?

I think it's more like the seal on the oil filter.
Gotcha, I called the jaguar dealership and they said that it most likely comes with the cooler. But I think if I went to a junkyard and grabbed one off another car then I would be able to find something at the parts store to use for the other that we can't find a part number for. And I will call the Jag dealer from now on when a mystery of a part comes up they were so much more helpful than Ford dealers have been.

Do you have the part number for a gen 2 gasket. I'm having the exact same leak.

To the one that looks like the 8? If so it's the same for 2000-2006 far as I have seen.

I checked it for a 2000 and a 2006 V8 ls and it says that it fits. If you are talking about the oil cooler one I will assume you can only get it like Joe said on a new cooler. But I talked to my one mechanic that did this repair before on my Gen 2, and he said the auto parts store will have something for the cooler gasket. Just to take it into the store and they will match it up.

Check the front damper seal.. and while you're at it see if the oil spray didn't swell the damper elastomer.
