Anyone know if the rear ends are interchangable...specificly will a 2003 TBird rearend fit a 2000LS...the whole rearend, including the a arms etc??? Anyone out there know?
 
i put a 04 T-Bird diff into my 02 to get the 3.58 gearing advantage. I am guessing its the same setup.
 
Hey 02v8sport, did you do the mod yourself? I want to change mine too and was wondering about the specialty tools...the Torquing Wrenches, Half Shaft Remover and Seal Protector...are these necessary on the R&R? I courrently have 3.07's and purchased a 3.58 diff but my one half shaft is making some noise and I can purchase a Whole rearend, including the a-arms, shafts, diff...everything from rotor to rotor...but its a Tbird and want to ensure the interchange is correct before I purchase. Don

I did the mod along with my mechanic (friend that basically watched). No special tools at all but a torque wrench for the axle nuts, the shafts come out easily by pulling on them. Only thing I recommend is to buy new shaft seals and new axle nuts. The seals are to stop future leaks and the axle nuts pretty much strip completely when removed. Its a time consuming job but not very hard.
 
Is this mod to make it posi or is it just for the gears just wondering. Also how much of a diffrence will it make with the performance

Not posi, just the gearing, there isnt a posi setup for this car that is reasonable for the $$. The difference is there, many people on the list dont believe its worth the difference but its there as far as getting the RPM's up faster. Look at 00 V8 vs. 02 V8 published 0-60 and 1/4 times 00's are usually .5 seconds faster. The 00 had the 3.58's the 02 had 3.31's

I'm doing it for performance...with the manual transmission being 5th gear is 1:1 and 3.07 rear gears, I can only get it in 4th gear in the mile... I need to get it in high gear to improve my speed.

But getting back to the original question...LS and TBird rearend the same???Anyone know???
 
Try to find if the rear tread(axle width) is the same. This my help you determine if control arm length is the same. Look for boths specs, if they match, I would think they're the same, if not, something is gotta be different.
 
According to the article Quik hotlinked a few weeks ago ( http://www.designnews.com/article/CA86948.html ), the support frame for the rear suspension is identical between the LS and the S-Type, and the suspension's the same with different tuning, so it's a very high order or probability that they're the same between the LS and T-Bird. If they're not different on the Jag, there's no reason for them to be different on the T-Bird.

The easiest way to tell would be to check part numbers. I know you can look up LS part numbers at Team Ford's Parts Web site, and it should also have the T-Bird parts, too (look up Bill Jenkins, TeamFord, for the URL).

I've had the front of the driveshaft off at the transmission when I changed the engine but haven't replaced it...Why do you want to change it?
 
i use to have an impala ss 1996 and a carbon fiber shaft was made for it. They claim that it helps with weight, drag on the tranny and better on gas. So i was just wondering if would be worth it, because i know they can get really high up in $$ Also just to put it up the claim was that it was 70% lighter than stock the CF one.

I agree, the CF is the ultimate but cost vs performance...one of the last mods; but bragging rights...one of the best! The LS has a "elastic band" type driveshaft with rubber connectors on both ends and a slip joint in the middle...the worse for straight line performance but what you'd expect from a Lincoln for right quality/noise/smooth takeoff. So, any driveshaft change will help performance, but CF, I agree, would be the best...but get one piece and get rid of the rubber ends!
