I have a 1998 Mk VIII that was sitting for about a year due to illness.
The engine starts fine. Shifter works and feels normal, but when put in gear, nothing happens. This is for each gear. It worked fine when parked

We have a few ideas to investigate, but has anyone else experienced this?

Something may have become disconnected... or become brittle and broke with the shifter linkage.

Have a buddy, neighbor, friend crawl under the car (engine not running) and have them watch the shifter cable while you move the shifter.

If you need a rebuilt trans .. available from ford and thru dealers at about $3500. Installed

Had 97 same problem . Put rebuilt trans from ford at $3500. Installed only drove less than 1500 miles . Problem returned 4 months before warranty ran out. Towed to dealer initial inspect said gasket leaking. Dealer could not get to move put 3 qts fluid went into gear . Pulled pan down discovered rubber gasket at fill tube was leaking. Not covered by warranty . Also speed sensor bad. So $709. Later works fine . Car has 170k miles owned 24 years . Fantastic car C and will still do 130 mph ( closed private road).

You are correct about different dealer. Tried to get to ford dealers to take they would not. Small mtn Va town. Could not get to NC.
Did not want to take back to this dealer for following reasons
2 months to get car back trans set on floor for 45 days .
They broke drivers side mirror.
Check engine light on when car returned .
Put wrong oil in my Navagator and wanted to leave in. Mobil 1 full syn is what I wanted. Made them drain out change filter & put correct oil. Watched them to make sure.
My review on Yelp was not good. They even contacted me to see what it would take for me to remove
Cannot put on here what my response was but am sure you know¥>|#%^**|~^<|^*

Was it an OEM transmission that was installed... or a rebuild of the old one.

My guess would be that the dealer no longer stocks (can get) the OEM part anymore, so they outsource the transmission to a rebuilder.

The transmission was OEM by directly from ford. I doubled checked Ford website . Rebuilt trans cost $2800. Labor. $700. Ford has quite a bit of remanfactured parts available .
