Low Mileage 2000 V6

What concerns are there for 1st year models?

now i remember the biggest reason you dont want a 00...

Ninja cup holders!!!!!!!!! god could there be anything worse... its all fun and games until it decides to throw a big gulp in your lap on a hard right turn getting on the hwy.

Took me a minute to even figure out how they worked. I'm not a big 'in car beverage guy' so the type of cup holder is of little concern. And I don't think I have ever had a Big Gulp but that's because I don't drink sugar water.

The reason the 1st Gen V6 seems more reliable is there are far, far fewer of them. Even fewer represented here. My daughter is still driving my old 2000 that we bought new (now over 190K miles). It has had all the cooling system problems my '06 had. It needed a new solenoid pack and had to have the hydraulic fan replaced (under warranty); also the A/C compressor (which ate itself). The 1st gen V8's had timing tensioner problems, but that was corrected by '03, IIRC.

The 500 changes were, in fact, improvements. I would never acquire a 1st Gen V6 over an '06 V8. The only reason I sold my '06 (still have my wife's) is I didn't want to try and keep two in repair with parts becoming rarer (the HID headlights are no longer available. I do have a driver's side in my garage...).

Lets play your game a minute. Pick a random part that you might one day need. I pick the gen I hydraulic fan system. It's not available new at all now. When it was, it was somewhere close to $4,000.

Well that turned out to be not true.

Parts.com, EBay and Amazon also have several available. I suppose if you hit a deer or rear-ended a pickup truck with the gate down, you would need the entire assembly. Otherwise, replacing the pump seems the way to go if you wanted to stay original. Seems an electric fan makes more fiscal sense though.

Replacing the pump works if that is what has failed, and you know that. It is difficult to diagnose which part of the system failed. Even the dealers just replaced everything. Read some threads on here about it. I think you'll find that the fan motor fails a lot too.

Any more on this? I'd like to have a Sunroof but most every LS I see with one is a V8. Are the 1st Gen V8's really something to avoid? There is a one-owner 2001 near me with just over 100k and in a color I like.

some 1st gens had plastic tensioners, fixed mid 02 (need to check build dates)... But your asking our opinion on these cars, but not taking any of our advice... (so if you want a first gen, go buy one). Nothing we can warn you about will stop you. And nothing we'll be able to list, will be something you'll be able to know when buying. (COPs, cooling, etc.)

your best bet hands down in an 06. after that, your rolling the dice on any other model.

06 best... 00/01 v6 worst (but for reasons you can't filter out when buying, without complete service histories)...

can they BE reliable (that depends on your defention of reliable). MY 02 has been amazing!! but thats my opinion, someone else may think otherwise.

Your arguing opinions, not facts... With our expereince here (as a site), we say for a FACT that an 06 is a better buy and 1st gen.

That said, its your car/time/money.. buy what YOU think is best (not the internet!!!!)

As is mine.

I am wanting to be educated but I don't think that's arguing. One other observation I have made is that when you add a V8 and Sunroof to the equation, the price seems to jump $2000. That seems off to me.

But I could own a V8.....

Most of the first year concerns have likely been fixed on it by now. An upgrade would be to look for a gen II V8. (If you like heated seats, then try heated and cooled seats.)
The odds are good that the gen I seat heat elements have failed on it.

is that really doable!?!? Gen 2 cooled/heated seats on a Gen 1??

Do you need more than just gen 2 parts to make it work?

No, but you will need pretty much all of them.
You'll need the gen II seat electronics and seats.
You'll need the gen II wiring harnesses.
You'll need the gen II climate control. (controls the heated/cooled seats)
You'll need the gen II PCM - gen II climate control only talks to gen II PCM.
You'll need the gen II engine and transmission (gen II PCM only knows how to control those)
Now you'll need nearly every other gen II module.

Way easier to swap all these parts at once, swap gen I LS for gen II LS.
I never suggested you could upgrade a gen I with gen II seats. I suggested that it would be an upgrade to get a gen II LS instead of a gen I LS.
