I've done some searching around and haven't really seem to found anyone with the exact same problem as me. Just let me know what you think i suppose, hoping to not have to dump anymore money into my car then i already have.

Here goes~

My 1993 mark viii has been leaking oil for some time now. I got the oil pressure sensor replaced (the shop told me that is what it was though i can not be 100%) and the problem persisted. I brought it back and they told me they had to replace a gasket around the filter. I come back to a hefty bill and them telling me they had to jack up the engine to do the work. I was satisfied "knowing" that the leak was stopped and began to drive back to my appartment.

On the way back i noticed a slight tick which from what i read is pretty normal and on cold days i often hear this as well. As i was a half mile from the house the tick got louder and turned into a knock. As i laid off the accelerator it became louder and when i tapped the accelerator again it got quieter. Knowing this could be a serious problem i quickly found my parking spot and shut off the engine and called a tow truck.

When the tow truck arrived i decided to start it to see how bad it sounded (figured the damage may have been done) but there was no knock. Just to be safe i had it towed back and when i called in this morning they told me i had to take it to an engine specialist and they thought the lifters were bad (assuming they meant lash adjusters which from what i understand are basically the same thing.)

As for my question.... what do i do? What do i have them check and how much should i expect to pay for potential problems or even just for them to diagnose it? I am quite strapped for cash at the moment and am also in dire need of a working vehicle. Any advice would be a huge help.

Wow. You do not need to lift the engine to replace that oil filter adapter gasket :(

You *may* have a bad valve spring. Relatively easy afternoon project.

The whole thing seems a bit weird though.

Agreed, going to find out more when i go back. When i asked why they needed to do they they told me it was what the dealer told them to do when they called. They said there was more to it then a gasket so i just have to find out what the "more" was.

If you got a "hefty bill" for the oil filter adapter gasket....
What do you think someone is going to charge you to Remove, Repair and Replace the engine.

*hint*
If you are strapped for cash, your not gonna like the answer.
ANY type of internal engine repair is probably going to exceed the value of the car by a WIDE margin.

If a trans rebuild is 2K
I'd be willing to bet an "engine rebuild" is 3 times that much.
Especially considering 32 valves, 32 valve springs, 32 lifters,
4 cams at 1200.00 for the set.. and we haven't even gotten into the 100.00 headgaskets and 100.00 head bolts.

If I were you, I would seek out a reasonalbe mileage replacement and have "who-evers" mortgage payement you want to make.. install it for you.

It'll be much cheaper than trying to "go inside" a motor and address some "unknown issue".. unless you want to pay for someones Mortgage, Car Payment, Boat Payment AND ALIMONY Payment.

Sorry... wish I had better news/idea

They are full of it. Sure, it is hard to get to but I did one just a couple months ago on a Town Car. Same 4.6 so I doubt it is any different.

I dont think there is a person here who ever has listed the engine to replace the gasket, even if they just lifted one side. Its not needed.

I would no be surprised if they did not even do so, but charged for it.

I basically had the same thing in mind about the lift not being necessary but i do trust that they did it, the owner is a good family friend but he isn't always in (and was not on this day). I'm going to have a chat with him tonight to see what all exactly they did.

They said the second time they started the car this afternoon it made no noise at all but they only started it to move it. I suppose we shall see when i arrive in the next hour or so.

Now i find it a little odd, the knock is not so loud anymore (at all) and i wouldn't so much call it a knock as a tap. Also, it only did it about 50% of the ride home, coming and going but never getting very loud. Either way i still am worried and do not have the time or money really to have it fixed so sadly, i think i am going to sell it.

Should anyone be looking for a 1993 mark viii with about 120k miles (it's actually about 90k but the odometer stopped working and i had to get a used one (with higher miles... but obviously it will be 'advertised' as 120k) and is in the central PA area you know where to look.

The car on the outside is in amazing condition, only one spot on the rear bumper with a rough spot (missing a bit of paint). The interior however is a little torn up since it recently had been broken into. I have replaced the rear seat entirely and am working on a left door panel and glove box. You can see a picture of it below.

I would like to note it no longer is lowered and does have not even year old HID's. The car will include the old headlights as well as the old grill to have some fun with. The new grill (meaning brand new) was just recently replaced and looks very nice. I also do not have the original stock wheels anymore so unforunately i will not be able to include them. Just replaced the tie-rods, new (solid) rear sway bar and the airbags were replaced just a few years ago along with the compressor.

Any questions please reply to here or e-mail jestoner16@aol.com

Hell man, I have a 96 engine with ~100K that needs a new oil pan and would be ready to run..... 300 plus shippin' and it's yours. No reason to dump the car if all it needs is a new engine.

Just curious does it sound similiar to what my car does. Your symptoms sound exactly like mine. I will tell that I have been driving my car and is still running for now. I think it will for sometime, might be an option for you if you can't sell it. I have another engine in a car I bought for parts, so I guess I'm a little more daring.

I had a "tap tap tap" once.... shortly after that the car "launched a spark plug"... and took out the threads in the head.

if you have a "tap tap tap" sound.. do yourself a favor and CHECK YOUR SPARK PLUGS.

it might not be a loose plug, but if it IS, you want to catch it before it loses the spark plug and the threads in the head.

I dont know, but I thought it was a bad valve lash adjuster? I dont know much about them. What should I do? Dont want to take it to a shop.

If any chain skips a tooth is will bend valves from what I've been told....

That really doesn't sound good at all.... this started right after you did all the work to your car?

Yep! Im pissed! Probly gona sell it!! I sick of throwing parts at this car. Everytime I fix something another BIGGER problem shows up!

These cars are a PITA.

But fun to have :p

I would pull the valve cover off the side the is making all the noise.
See what I could see.

yup pull the front cover, and id replace all the guides and tensioners. should not be that much movement since the side you move in the vid is the tensioned side (i believe)
