I have a question for all you Lincoln enthusiastic out there. I have a 2005 LS and I need to replace the head unit. I have been searching around and I found a nice unit, but it is for from a later model Lincoln/Ford. It is actually a unit from the new Ford/Lincolns, such as the MKZ/MKX.
This the unit's part number PART # 8L7T-18K931-BC. The Lincoln/Ford dealer wants me to sell my soul to buy a new unit, I rather buy this one and pay them to program it as needed.

Can anyone tell me if this head unit is by any means compatible with the navigations system setup of a 2005 LS and if any functionality will be lost and/or gained? Any assistance is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

In my head you should just be able to "plug and play" Find the correct cables for it, and wiring harness. Probably will need to solder the wires together.

However, Not sure how that would look in the LS though.

well first off that wont fit in your dash it is too tall, you could make it fit by fabricating something though...and as far as it working i dont think it will plug in but i could be wrong but i doubt it, your better off keeping the factory NAV or upgrading to aftermarket

it wont fit, and also the LS nav unit you bolt it on the top not the sides like this one, second even if you do get it in there it may not be compatible to the DVD map drive thats in your trunk, save yourself the headeaches and get a aftermarket one. by the way why are you replacing the nav head unit.

Ok here's a good question for ya...

You have an 05 Ultimate (which came with Navigation), but you need to replace the head unit.... hummm ok. Why? Did it get stolen? Did you brake it? Did it just stop working? or do you just not like it?

If it just stopped working, take it to the dealer and have them replace it under warranty. You do still have a warranty, don't you?

If this is not the case I would recommend this one:

You should be able to pick it up for about the same cost as the factory replacement from the dealer.

Bottom line is that while it may be possible to replace one Lincoln Navigation unit with one from another vehicle, it may require much more work than going aftermarket and the unit will not function exactly as it should. I'm sure they have made several modifications/improvements in the model design.
And besides that unit is hideous!

The 04-06 LS Nav has 4 Plugs in the back. It will be hard to remove a plug and still retain all the functions of the original unit. But anything is possible. Good luck!!

Thanks for the feedback all. Part of the crystal display is not showing, I will bring it to the dealer and see if they will replace/repair under warranty.

Forgive me for bringing up an older thread but how easy/hard is it to remove the factory Navigation head-unit? Say you just want to remove it to plug in a cable for an iPod? Does anyone have pictures or detailed steps? Do you need a tool to pull the unit out?

i could be wrong but wouldn't it be the same as the ones that don't have the nav unit? if so then just remove the message center and the two screws are there and two on the bottom of that i believe. your trying to get to the back of the unit correct?

The Double-Din install hits on it a little bit but its not very detailed. I was hoping to get a better idea.

Yeah to plug in a FRD-03/AUX from PIE for an iPod.

yeah that should work unless the Gen 2 are different than the Gen 1

Ok, so what exactly do I do?

My set up looks like this. This is an older picture and the ashtray works in that one, ha!

so the message center, where the top two vents are just pulls out. you can try prying it gently with a flat tool. it should pop right out though. once you remove that you will see 2 screws and remove the bottom parts as well. this includes the ashtray. from this pic i see where gen1 and gen 2 differ. none-the-less, i'm sure it's similar. take off the surrounding trim pieces and there should be some screws under those as well. i would greatly appreciate it if someone with a gen2 chimed in and corrected me if i'm wrong. i'm purely going off my gen1. the top part i'm 100% sure about though. the bottom, not so much. but you should be able to gently pull trim panels and feel the pressure if it is indeed pressure fitted with clips. check this link out, it's a fellow members. this is just to show you how the gen 1 looks

Thanks. I noticed the trim around the ashtray was snug with some pressure clips so I am sure the rest of the trim including surrouding the shifter is also just pressure clipped on. I'll see if I can find a really flat tool to try and unsnap the message center clips up top. I'm sure with a little playing around I can get that head-unit out. I appreciate your help.
