Ls Problems :(

there is some knocking and pinging and it shakes and jerks, hestates and its idles low and shakes real bad but never stalled on me yet ive drove it the way it is to brooklyn and back to queens ive smelled oil the whole time

so today i went and bought some maf cleaner thinkin it was the maf and when i opened the intake tube i seen oil allover the inside of the intake and there was a vlave where there was a tube to the intake tube from the vc that oil was coming in from i was shocked and that was the oil smell so

im unsure what to do now i went to 2 macanics one told me its the timeing chane and one told me its the maf so i dont know what to do now..... any advise?
any one have problems like this?
i would love some help and thanks to any one who provides some info to me thank you...btw ive serched the threads and noting came up. and i bough it a week ago its a 2000 Ls8
 
idk how do i know for sure? and in P and N the engine wont rev over 3000 rpms? anymore ideas please thanks for the input :)
 
From your symptoms, it's just as likely to be your floor mats as your timing chains. There is a list of the maintenance items to be found by searching.

Your 3K RPM limit is a result of the computer acting protectively. It isn't a fault!

Can you post a picture?

With the engine running, take the oil fill cap off. Place your hand over the opening. Do you feel a slight suction, or do puffs of air come out? If puffs come out, then your rings are shot and that's why oil is being blown into the intake.
 
oki will do that today and ive gotten the codes off the car wich are:
p1151
p0443
p0102
p0174
p0305
p0307
so theres the codes plus i was drivein it last night and the check enigne light was flashing and i pulled to the side and checked every thing and i opend the oil cap and smoke came out not alot but some i added oil so any advise would be great thank you guys for all the help you have already gavein me and ill try and take a pic today when i test this and the oil was comein from the vc to the intake tube right after the maf
 
ok so far i think i need new timing chane tenioners on the driver and passger side and i checked and it was sort of blowing air out of the oil fuller side how much you think this stuff is gona cost for all this stuff to be fixed? and could i install the tenioners myself and is there a step-by-step giude?

It's shot. The engine needs a complete rebuild. It will be more cost effective to swap the whole engine out.
 
Chain job is a PITA. Took me and a buddy 4.5 days. Use the search and google. There's plenty of notes out there.
If you get a fair bit of air out of the filler then you have bigger problems.
 
i mean i drove it to broolyn and back to queens with out any problems it just shakes and jerks alot it hadsnt died on me at all and at high way speeds it smood

Or, if you don't want to listen to Joe, then go do what you wanna do and let us know how it works out.

If there is a tensioner problem then the engine WILL destroy a head and possibly more parts at any moment.

You've already listed most of these symptoms.

Getting an engine rebuild is more common that you may think. As part of the auto maintenance, doing an engine rebuild sometimes is necessary for your automobile to function well. So here is a list of common signs that tell you that you need to rebuild your car's engine.

1. Knocking
If you ever hear a sound coming from your engine that sounds bad, it would have to be the knocking sound that gets louder when you rev up the automobile. This loud sound may make you think that someone is really knocking on your engine. This sound is not just annoying, but not good for the car either. It is not normal and sometimes it can lead to other auto problems if not addressed properly.

2. Excessive Smoke
Tailpipes normally sit the back of the car, so they do not get much attention at all. However, if you or someone else has told you that your tailpipe blows excessive smoke out of it, it maybe time for an engine rebuild. Also, if the smoke is thick and dark that might also be a clue. Just keep an eye on the tailpipe and take notice of any unusual smoke or a larger amount of it is coming out of your tailpipe.


3. Burning Oil Quickly
Getting new oil in your car is a normal part if maintenance, but if you feel that your car goes through too much oil you may want to consider getting your engine rebuilt. For an example if you use 1 qt of oil for every 1000 miles you drive, that would be a sign of burning the oil to quickly. So keep checking to see just how much oil you and your car goes through after driving for a certain amount of miles.

4. Compression Loss
If your car is misfiring, you may have compression loss which will only be repaired by doing an engine rebuild. Not only is misfiring annoying, but it can make you late and is also not good for you engines health. So make sure that you pay attention when starting up for any signs of misfiring.

5. Using Too Much Fuel?
Fuel for cars can be pricey and annoying to have to keep refilling up. But when the engine is slow or not working well, it can uses a lot more gas just to run. So checking your gas gauge on a regular base is a very good idea to check for signs of when you will need to rebuild your engine.



We all know its not the info you want, but thats the way it usually goes. Its also the way it usually goes when you buy a higher mileage used car. You have no idea "usually" how the car has been treated / maintained.

yesh i think you guys are right a rebuild might be whats needed well any ideas on how much a rebuild is?
and if i could do it my self becuse ive always been more of a do-it-your-selfer :)

If the rings are gone, I question how good of shape the cylinder walls are in. Also, I can only assume that it was run without adequate oil changes to get to this shape in the first place. I suspect that a safer economic bet would be to swap it out for a good used engine, but that is just a guess. I can't see it from here.
 
well it hads oil and on the dash it says the oil hads 40% left and the oil looks good cant lie .

any ieas on prices?
 
You're in the territory of car repair where you really need local help/guidance or hand it over to someone. Don't do an engine swap or rebuild based on info from a board if you don't already have the experience.

This didn't happen over one 5K mile oil change interval. This is more likely to be from 50K miles or more of abuse. The oil change indicator only says how long since the last time it was reset. It doesn't really know anything about the oil in the engine or when it was last changed. You just bought the car. I'm sure they changed or topped up the oil before they showed it to you.
There are a lot of things to check for when buying a used car. The big one that you missed was a check for excessive blow-by. Live and learn, we all do.

yeah your right well.... hopefully to fix ( or swap everything) wont cost more then 1000 bucks :(
