LS totalled?

No need too be...when I ride I look in the mirrors as much as I do forward....defensive driving...always know your surroundings....but there's nothing like it.

I've driven a bike in several third world countries where the conditions are insane, but NY/NJ area makes me nervous. People drive so carelessly.. there's a reason car insurance is highest here... defensive driving is a must, even in a car.

Did you have a family of 5 hanging on the side of your bike with you? haha

Hahahahhaa most I've had on my bike is 3, including myself :) However, 5+ is not uncommon overseas. And just like here in the U.S. anything more than 2 is illegal. I actually have several pictures on my phone of 8 - 10 people on bikes (ridiculous). There's a fine line between whats legal and what you can get away with in other countries though, especially when you have a little bit of money. Not saying that I do, but when the exchange rate is 1-50 or more, it's easy to make the dollar go far.

In my mid 20's I t-boned a car that crossed my lane, with my Ninja 600R , hit is so hard, wedged the front wheel into the cars front passenger side wheel well, split my front rim, cracked the engine block.

Left leg got stuck in between the car's front fender and my bike.

Ended up slapping the cars windshield with my helmet in a left side swipe motion, still stuck with left leg in between car and bike.

According to a witness, the car kept going and it went up on the curb which cause me, while on the hood, to trampolin into the air and hurled higher than the small trees nearby.
apparently landing flat on my back on the ground.

Awoke in the ambulance strapped to a wooden board with a neck brace on, while they were cutting my jeans apart in the mid seams.
full of blood at the crotch, would appear the hard impact, separated the gas tank with seat in an upwards motion and got my ball sack ripped open. boys turned out ok.

Scars on the front of both legs from digging into the handle bar controls.
Broken left leg, twisted vertebra, damaged L1 & L2 in the lower back, glass in scar on left hand.

Took a while to get healed up but I took the insurance money and bought another bike, got back on.

Doc told me I was very close to being in a wheelchair for the rest of my life, had that L1 & L2 slipped just a little further it would have popped out.

got lucky, very lucky.

I always pay full attention to motorcyclists and never ever attempt to try sneak in front of them or cross lanes when they are within my vision.

----EDIT: Ooops "edit" = that was with my Kawasaki GPZ 550 and I bought a Ninja 600R with the insurance money.

Thanks, I didn't need these pants anyway....

Best part was, the girl was driving her dad's Chrysler lebaron, could barely see over the dashboard, had her license for just two weeks.

turned out her family owned a chinese restaurant, we were invited for supper when the whole ordeal was over. Me and my folks, I walk in with a cast on and crutches to hold me up. Ate like Kings for free that evening.
took several dates there afterwards and always got away with a reduced bill.

oh yeah, the "Happy Wong Palace" restaurant. haha ... and I used to always joke with "she made the WONG turn in front of me" lol

Her father and her brother were very concerned for me and treated me good, even send flowers to the house for my Mother when it first happened.

Well that would be the least they could do lol.

Glad you made it out of all that OK, thats crazy. Buddy of mine was on a bike the other day got hit by an elderly woman who actually HOPPED a median in her car. He took a front bumper to the face literally. He said he remembers this: Seeing the front of her car hit his helmet front on, then next thing he knows he was seeing the pavement fly by as he was face down sliding on the pavement.. then waking up in the hospital. This was last year and he's already riding again.

yeah, you gotta get back on as soon as possible or you will have issues trying it later after something like that.

hell, my buddy used to pick me up on his Yamaha FJ 1200, me on the back holding onto my crutches, with a cast on and my toes sticking out while he leans on ramps real low. "My toes, my toes ... you fool, I have no boot on that leg dummy!" lol, we laughed.

I remember cutting my cast of myself and dipping my whole foot into the pool, it was heaven!

Worst thing I had happen was I walked out to the shed the other night and mine was on it's side...damn ground gave way with all the rain and stupid me didn't block it.

Pay for stupid crap.

Been there, done that, kick stand in a brand new driveway on a hot summer day. yup! she fell over.

I was in bike accident a few years back... still not sure if my fault or his... but its in the past...
cruising down my street speed limit 35 (now 25), its just a little over a mile half way point is the 4 way stop... houses lined on both sides... 2 car lanes wide... (perfect for drag)... younger guy backing out of drive way fresh with his new DL, dady's SUV (Tahoe) didn't see me approaching the 4 way, id say maybe 25mph approaching SUV as he back out of drive way, causing me to slam on brakes and take a different route... clipped his bumper, and he kept backing up... knocking the bike down... happened so quickly couldn't tell you how it really happened and some how fell with bike...

Parents came rushing dad yelling at his son...

needles to say, things happen and will happen, its inevitable... the US, has the most safest driving... than the smaller countries... and they were so nice... help me up picked up bike, they were going to call ambulance, guy was a DR. mom was a physician so they had money, I believe in karama, I could have made a big stink about it all but just let it go, cracked a lower fairing, broken clutch and brake handle and bent frame slider... His dad bought the replacement parts, and paint to fix it.... so its all good!!

Feel like Im missing something to this story... happened 2007, just cant remember it all...

But like I said... its inevitable, things will happen and if they haven't they will... ITS LIFE!

Done with bikes. Found a dead body on the interstate back in '98. Troopers held till they knew for sure I wasn't involved. I was the one that called itin single vehicle crash. Guy hit a bump. Didn't CURRECT fast enough. Hit the wall. Launched him about 200 feet. Dead on impact. Broke his neck.

BigRig can back me up on this. It's not the guys on bikes. It's the distracted driver the is usually at fault. I do see the ccassional biker weaving in and out of traffic. Most of the time it's the driver changing lanes that hits the biker.

Motorcycles tend to sneak up on ya, they are harder to spot on a sunny day, they do travel at higher rate of speeds (generally, driver depending of course)

since my own accident long time ago, I've always made it a point to watch real good for motorcyclist, more so since I started driving truck. Now pedestrian and cyclists too close to the curb are added to the list.

Always give them pedestrians a little hang on the horn to indicate to them it would be wise to step back a little, my rears will be within inches of that curb as I pull a wide right here folks. step back please, hide/hold onto your children.

Hey John, got a call about whether I'd be interested in an oversized haul on contract ?
Fn stoked about it, first ever oversized and will be piloted for the duration. 3 day regional work. Traveling at night.

Never had anything hang over the sides, should be interesting.

I've seen my fair share of organ donors on bikes.

And by the way I am a donor recipient...so if you aren't a donor you should be!

Thought "oversize" loads could only run during daylight hours?

They hauled a used generator from San Onofre to Utah. Took a couple of weeks and they could only travel at night. Same with the space shuttle when it went from LAX to downtown; only at night

Apparently not this gig, I'm meeting with them on Friday for full details, good money.
Also won't be the only oversized going, few of them spaced apart.

It's all new to me, I've always been within the rails.

We have really rural, twisty, mountainous roads where I work and the bikers come from miles around to ride on em during the summer. Haven't had fatalities this year, but I am sure its coming. Had a guy last week hit a bump and hop off his bike and land on the top side of the guard rail where the tops of the "I" beams are. He slid down the guard rail and those "I" beams sliced his stomach up pretty good. Had protective jacket on and everything.

Not motorcycle related, but by far the weirdest wreck was a van transporting bodies to a morgue rolled on the interstate. It's a pretty unsettling feeling not knowing wtf is going on when you go to a rollover and the driver is in critical but there are also just bodies lying about.

<shivers>

yuck ... what a bitch that must be, you're already dead, no seatbelt and your in an accident ... that would suck!

Can you imagine this as your day job, transferring dead people in a van ? No thanks, I'll pass!

Wow, BigRigLS and UpstairsChris playing nice. :D

I gave up on bikes years ago, when I was 15 I had a wreck that screwed up my back. Now I'm in my 40s and my back still locks up from time to time. I decided then that I'd rather have the car take the dents for me than me keep the dents out of the bike. In my accident, I was puttering along a city street where new houses were being built. The road was in place, but the houses were not, or so I thought. I came over this rise, then all of a sudden no road, no warning signs, just construction debris piled in what turned out to be a T in the road. I hit a pile of dirt, flew through the air, the bike dropped out below me and I landed directly on my head. Or, at least so I gather from the evidence as I remember hitting the ground, then waking up. My helmet was in pieces and I'm certain that if it hadn't rained the day plus the area had been worked over by construction gear softening it up before I'd have died. I left a hole in the ground with my head and my left shoulder, which now sits about an inch lower than my right shoulder. You can't tell unless you're looking for it.

Today, that intersection is a proper crossroad and there are about 400 houses out there now.

Sad to report that this is a no go ... sounded to me like he found bodies with the experience he felt comfortable with. :(

Don't blame him, he and I both knew I had never run anything oversized before.

Such is life, would have been cool though.

Perhaps next time.
