My 97 LSC still has the original exhaust system on it including all of the cats. It is still very quiet- too quiet. A baffle seems to have broken loose in one of the mufflers though which is enough justification for me to replace the mufflers. The local exhaust shop suggested I go with MagnaFlows - not sure which ones- as I am looking for a nice rumble. I have you-tubed and found a bunch or vid's of Mark's but most seem to have at least the 3rd cat removed in addition to performance mufflers. What kind of sound increase/tone can I expect just by replacing the mufflers at this point?

My 97 has a third cat delete, x pipe, two magnaflows. IMO they are not significantly louder. I'd say about 25% louder than stock

performance wise you'll probably get more from a third cat delete and x pipe than the mufflers alone.

you should do both when you get it into the exhaust shop.

Of course its still very quiet...you haven't changed anything yet ;P

I am just going for some rumble right now, have to do it in in steps as budget permits so cat and x-pipe will have to be at a later date :(

With my cat's and everything being intact still I am thinking that I won't get a noticeable increase in exhaust note. Might not be worth the investment at this point. Though while I am sitting at a stop light the one muffler rattle is rather annoying :(

Are you sure its the muffler and not the substrate in the cat? I have the magnaflow x muffler and rear mufflers. It has a nice tone, but not loud by any means

I've had 3 different exhaust on my 93. The first was stock with just Cherry Bomb glass packs replacing the mufflers in the back. I still have them and you can have them for free just come and pick them up at my brothers garage. They could install them there if you like. Believe it or not these sounded very nice and was louder than stock but not loud. The second came from the parts car I bought and we installed its complete exhaust as it was new. It was Kooks headers into dual 2 1/4" pipes all the way back into two Magnaflow mufflers in the back. It did not have a X or H pipe. It didn't perform much better and I didn't care for the sound. So we started over from the headers with 2 1/2" pipe into a mid mounted Magnaflow dual 2 1/2" in and out X-Pipe resonator. It performs much better but it is loud. I believe the X or H pipe is very important. For performance and sound. You might want to check out Geno's exhaust at Lincolnmotorsport. It sounds nice. Here is mine on video. Just me personally but I'm going with the Magnaflow SS dual in, dual out with built in X. Then having pipes mandrel bent right there in the shop and probably going with Magnaflow mufflers because I don't want anything raspy at all. I want all low tone as possible but without 3rd cat and res.
Geno, not knocking any of the exhaust stuff you're selling at all because it is a nice setup. I just don't like a Mark VIII do be loud and raspy sounding but I speak for myself when I say that. I don't want my car loud but I do want to know it's able to breathe like it should but "quietly" with a low toned rumble sound. I want it louder than stock, don't get me wrong but not "hear me coming loud" if that makes sense.

This is the X I'm going with for sure and then mufflers, I'm not positive on yet.

This may be a dumb question, but since we're talking about the X-pipe mufflers... I've been playing around with the idea of something like that for when I get another Mark, but I wasn't sure about ground clearance issues. Admittedly, I haven't spent alot of time underneath a Mark VIII behind the engine and in front of the rear axle, so I was just wondering how it would fit and at where exactly you're planning to mount it?

OP, I just had a Dynomax X muffler installed and sounds great. I'm not running any extra mufflers or resonators so it's a bit louder. IA think it's a good alternative if you decide to go with something other than Mag's

Kind of a long vid:

oooook I never knew out exhuats was loud and raspy, it's actually the opposite 100%. You obviusly never heard our system in person.

Yes it'll add ground clearance issues, especially if you're lowered

Not saying it's raspy but does sound a bit loud (in a video) and you're right, I have never heard it in person. I have only heard the videos of it and they were done during the night I believe. Not saying it sounds bad either, just for me, I don't want anything loud sounding. I'm also not a fan of the dual outlet tips on both sides but that's just one of those personal likes, dislikes. I'm more for the single tip, oval shape. If I wasn't so far away, I would love to come listen to one in person. Nobody around me in Alabama has what you have or anyone even remotely close to me.

Like I said, I'm not downing it because you are installing two X's to eliminate drone inside the car or keep it to a minimum and I respect that. It's all a nice setup but the tips are one thing I would have to change. A lot of people like the duals on each side but then some don't. I think singles on each side would tone it down a little but I could be wrong there too. I'm just going by a video that was shot during the night and I think it's in the LMS exhaust commercial.

You could put the Magnaflow Dual in and out Resonator in the middle like I have on the 93 and add Geno's LMS mufflers in the rear. Thats why I asked if he would sell just the mufflers. I think his mufflers sound better than Magnaflows. Or you could use the Dynomax like Magnetico, I havent heard his.

Do you like the double tip look or single tip? Geno probably has a good muffler, it's just the dual tip part I'd have to remove and go with single ovals.

I had ovals and they never sold, took me a year to sell a skid of ovals vs a skid of dual tips went in 3 months. Also the video is so unrealistic for both parties because it was a BRAND new system not seasoned, it was in the winter, in a hollowed out shop to boot. Ask anyone that has it if they think it's loud or raspy.

It's ALL personal preference. I have headers, no cats, x-pipe and dual-oval stainless mufflers at the rear. It's loud, it drones, and it sounds like a muscle car. Just how I like it. When you race an 08 GT with catback and your Lincoln is louder, I like that. It also let him know that he wasn't losing me anytime soon. I'm sure he was nervous when I was rattling his doors off. :p Chit, I'm ready for cut-outs. :D

If I could change one thing on my exhaust, I would put Magnaflows at the tail and get rid of the cheap mufflers. I LOVE the sound of Magnaflows on a Mark VIII.

^Excellent^ I love it, lololol. Best description I have heard yet!!

If you just want to replace the mufflers and nothing else, the Race Series Magnaflows have a nice rumble, and you can get them with tips or not. I got lots of compliments on the sound of mine, even more so now with the 3rd cat and resonator removed. :)
