This has been beaten to death but I have found some new info!! The after market has now come up with a working Jaguar XK8 4.0 V-8 manual conversion. This is the sister engine to our 3.9 V-8. Not much information yet but take a look!

Don't know what transmission is used. The racing S-Type R used a BMW 6-speed from the M5 and adapted it to the Jaguar 4.2 V-8.

The hard part is not mating a manual transmission to the 3.9 or fitting it into place in the car. The difficult part is the computer work that needs to be done. So this might not be that successful for those looking to drop a manual in the LS until someone wants to put up the money to work out the computer issues.

Hey, where is JES_LS? That guy is supposed to be working on this project!!

Eliminating the auto tranny through the computer tune is not terribly hard. There are a few system switches to turn off in the Advantage software. Then it will likely throw about 15 codes for various transmission sensors that the computer sees missing. Then just go through and get rid of those manually and you are set. I have already gone through the process of eliminating the 5 speed auto tranny from another computer using the PTEC PCM. While not being a totally simple process, it is not impossibly hard either. Once one is done then all following that will be easy as pie.

i wonder if it would be easier to swap an 8 into a manual 6er and use the 8's ecm but the 6ers rear control. that way you have the pedals and everything and clutch lines and all that good stuff already there. is that an option, because if my motor keeps fighting me im gonna blow it up and swap in some sort of 8.

If the hard part is not mating a manual or fitting a manual, what manuals will mate and fit to the 3.9 V8?

@ILLS: If you did nothing to the computer after mating the trans would the car even run?

The LS's PCM controls both the engine and tranny, so you'd be right back where you started. The only way to do it right is to do what ILLS said--eliminate the tranny and its sensors from the PCM's code.

I believe that the car would run but it would throw a ton of DTC's. I do not believe that would be a proper way to go, though. Heck, even when I did the standalone transmission swap in my other vehicle and eliminated the trans through the switches in the tune I still threw 16 DTC's relating to the various electrical sensors and circuits for the 5R tranny. Those DTC's were taken care of with a little additional work and has been fine for a long time now.

I don't mind the codes. What standalone transmission swap did you do? Was this on an LS?

2003 Ford Explorer meant for dragstrip use. Has the same PCM as the LS and also has the 5R55W tranny which is a sister transmission to the 5R55S and 5R55N transmissions. It now has a bullet proof 4R70W transmission built to hold 1,000+ that is controlled by its own standalone transmission computer.

Umm I'm guessing from that that it was an automatic transmission swap...?

Yeah, but the concept is the same--the PCM is no longer controlling the tranny, so you have to make the PCM "forget" the tranny. The only difference between that and a swap to a manual tranny would be that you wouldn't need the stand-alone tranny controller.

Hey I'm trying to tie off the HD COP deals and get situated in a new job.

Besides the first ls conversion I have on my plate involves the wife's v6.

you know right after I paint the porch, paint two bedrooms, replace a couple more house windows, rewire the third floor.

Exactly. Thanks sooner.
