Many Americans can't answer correctly if asked if the Earth moves around the Sun

"Embryonic stem cells are a primitive type of cell that can be coaxed into developing into most or all of the 220 types of cells found in the human body (e.g. blood cells, heart cells, brain cells, nerve cells, etc).
Adult stem cells bear some similarities to embryonic stem cells. Research using adult cells has a two decade head start on embryonic stem cells. Thus, potential treatments have already advanced to human trial stage. Unfortunately, adult cells are limited in flexibility. "

"Unethical reporting on stem cells:
Focus on the Family Action emphasizes that:

"The truth is that embryonic stem-cell research has yet to yield a single successful treatment for patients. Meanwhile, adult stem cells continue to provide success stories." 4

They note that investors have little interest in investing in embryonic stem cell research at this time because there is little likelihood that fully tested treatments or cures will be made available for general use in the near future.

This is a common assertion found in countless social and religiously conservative news sources. The implication is that embryonic stem cells will never successfully used to treat or cure human diseases or disorders. Their implication is that embryonic stem cell research is a blind alley. We have seen this same story mentioned dozens of times from at last a half dozen conservative news sources. None of them have ever mentioned that embryonic stem cell research is in its infancy and will probably need another two decades to arrive at the same stage as adult stem cell applications are today. "The President's Criteria
On August 9th, 2001, President George W. Bush announced that federal funds may be awarded for research using human embryonic stem cells if the following criteria are met:

The derivation process (which begins with the destruction of the embryo) was initiated prior to 9:00 P.M. EDT on August 9, 2001.
The stem cells must have been derived from an embryo that was created for reproductive purposes and was no longer needed.
Informed consent must have been obtained for the donation of the embryo and that donation must not have involved financial inducements. "

"Can the president's plan work?
"Since 1996, federal law has prohibited the use of tax dollars to destroy human embryos. The Clinton administration, however, adopted rules saying federally funded scientists could conduct experiments on stem cell lines as long as they did not themselves participate in embryo destruction. Cells were to be derived from embryos destroyed with private money in private labs, then shipped to federally funded scientists for study. The government was on the verge of issuing its first stem cell grants when Bill Clinton left office."

President George W. Bush initially banned stem cell research funding while his administration's policy was developed. On 2001-AUG-9, President Bush decided to allow limited future stem cell funding. He said the issue was "one of the most profound of our time." He decided to approve funding because stem cell research offered immense promise for the cure of diseases and disorders. But he said it was "important that we pay attention to the moral concerns of the new frontier." "
