Massive vibration above 75mph????

My stearing wheel vibrated like crazy when I go above 75mph. I have 03 sport with only 65k miles. Is this ball joints? thanks!
 
I have the same vibration @ the steering wheel at around 120km/h. It only goes completely away at around 130.

make sure all of your tires are balanced before you even think about ball joints
 
when was the last time you had a alignment? you probably want to get under and check to see if you can find anything loose or any components with too much slack.
 
Yea tires put on bout 3k miles ago with alignment and balance as wheel. Cant find anything with play in the suspension.
 
Take each front wheel off and roll it across a flat surface. If one wobbles, then it has a belt separating, and that is the issue. I've had this happen with a new tire before.

Was the alignment that you had done a four-wheel alignment? (It needs to be.)

I have the exact same problem. Mine is an 04 and I cannot find any play with my suspension either. I know a few people that changed out the steering rack and that worked. This may be the resolution to a lot of the problems that LS owners cannot figure out with the steering wheel vibration and wobble and save some money by not changing out the whole steering rack.

I have to agree with joegr, I had the same problem with mine, I work for a tire store and I had roadforce ballanced the tires 3 times. until I took the wheel orff the rime and could see the seperated belt inside. Replaced he tires and all is well.
 
Did you ever get this resolved?

I think I'm having a similar, if not the same problem. My steering wheel starts vibrating after 65mph, then 90+ he whole car starts vibrating A LOT!!!, feels like it's about to fall apart, or a wheel fly off so idk.

Can this be caused by camber being off? My car is lowered on Eibachs and it has a fresh alignment, but only the toe was adjusted bc of the lowering springs according to the tech.

I have my sentas on so almost brand new tires. Tire pressure is good. And it used to do The same thing with my stock wheels as well before the alignment.

What could be the problem???!!!
 
NEver fixed this yet. The wheels and tires are ok I just had them rotated and balanced. this problem had happened ever since I had the car with the tires brand new. I think it is something in the stearing rack maybe.

If the vibration started after you installed the tires the tires are most likely the culprit. What brand?
 
The vibrations were happening way before I got the new tires. It has nothing to do with the tires I believe.
 
Took the car to my mechanic and the balancing on the tires was fine...he's explanation was that my wheels were too big(I have 20s), and didn't look further. Time for a new mechanic!

Could this be the reason tho? Plenty of guys on here have 20s and I haven't heard of something like this happening to them.
 
before i bent one of my rims, i could go 100+ without vibration, so the wheels being too big is probably (if not 100%) false
 
mine do the same thing and i cant stand it. i dont even bother checking it out cuz if i go anywhere local ill get ripped off i gurantee it

same here, 100+ with not problems, but now im afraid to go that fast it really feels like the car will fall apart at those speeds.

and i doubt any of my rims are bent. and it was vibrating on the day i put them on so idk wtf is up
 
did u use hub centric rings (if the wheels need them, idk senta hub bore size)
 
Ive hit 110mph with no vibration on the stock wheels and yokohama tires and i have 64K on the odometer. Must be something loose in the steering rack or something with the wheels.
 
me too, but i dont have yoko's i have toyo lol... and had no vibration at 110, but 120 it slightly came
 
the vibrations only occurs about 70-75mph then goes away above 80. I have stock wheels.

Tire makers test extensively for resonant frequency vibrations from tires due to new tread patterns, manufacturing deviations and material deviations. All tires are not alike. Not even two of the same make and model. Two different people could have built the tires from different plants using different but similar materials. So what does this mean to us? All the best true tires go to OEM manufacturers because they want their cars to operate smoothly when new. All the rest are sold to the general public. All tires will resonate at different speeds and with different vehicles. At high speeds, higher than the tire can handle, the tire will literally shake itself apart. You should see the videos of high speed tire tests as the tires weave and wobble on the test drums. Makes you want to slow down real quick! You get what you pay for in tires. Best quality in my opinion is Michelin.

Have a set of Sumitomos put on you car next time around and you will change your opinion about the Michelins.
 
quality of construction

I've examined Sumitomo tires before, they looked average in construction, I've seen many, many from different manufacturers around the world. Michelins construction is impressive. You may enjoy the ride and performance better than Mich's.
 
Im having the exact same problem, vibration in the steering at speeds over 75 mph., i have new tires contisportcontac 255/45, and i have balanced the tires 3 times now and the problem still there, also when the car is parked and yo move the steering to the right, there´s some knocking feel in the steering... do you guys think it can be the rack?

im starting to worry about the car, so far i have had the air condition problem, a coil, and now this, an the car is a 2006 with 25000 miles.... sad because i love the car..
