Massive vibration above 75mph????

We could form a group complaint addressing our safety concerns, and send it over to FOMOCO. Never know what can come out of it..

As posted in my steering wheel sshake thread... I'm having the same issue.

I've now ruled out the entire suspension and the rack mount bushings.

Only things left are the steering shaft itself or the steering rack.

I did notice that when Mike Bass Ford did the engine swap last year, they replaced the PS fluid with PS fluid, and IIRC the LS is supposed to use trans fluid for the PS... If so, I may be able to get them to replaced the possibly damaged rack

in response to the complaint idea... I've tried it. Didnt get me very far.

But an 06 with low mileage having same issues... now that may show something.

Since my question in my last post seems to have been lost in my letter of a post lol, maybe someone will see it this time...can this massive vibration be caused by camber being off?

I doubt it.

My camber is within factory specs (front at least)

But I dont think anyone has ever looked to the rear... I know steering wheel = front, but with the LS who knows lol

so just to clarify, you dont think the vibration can be caused by camber being off?

Instead of the entire rack, have you had your inner/outer tie rods checked? I had terrible wobble at a certain speed that was fixed by replacing the worn driver's side outer tie rod on my LS.

Jack up the front driver's side. put your hands and 3 and 9 o'clock. try to wiggle it. If there's play, there's something up with tie rods. Do the same on the passenger side. Takes all of 5 minutes.

Thanks for that hint Pektel I am going to do that at some point today! (If I can get a jack under my lowered LS...)

both outter tie rods have been replaced within the past 6 months.

but it still doesnt account for the knocking sound when steering left/right or right/left in park.

Havent had time to do anything lately... but I saw a 2000 LS for parts with low miles on craigslist and am going to check out the rack over the weekend... if it looks good ill make an offer, and hopefully swap the new rack in and see if that works.

Vibration Solution

I had this problem when I bought new tires form my 2002 LSE....from the dealer. They had the car for a full week trying to get the vibration out. Eventually they gave up and said they'd put my old tires back. I had even spoken to Michelin (old and replacement tires) and they had given up.
I had read about a TSB and asked if they knew about it. Shortly after they did. The solution was to change a shim in the steering rack (which I was charged for but more than happy to pay).
I don't know the number of the TSB but the dealer should be aware. Maybe this'll help.

Cheers

Just to update:

My steering wheel vibration is GONE! I finally had the chance to do 120km/h+ (75mph) after switching over to my winter setup, and to my surprise, the steering wheel vibration has diminished entirely - my winter setup consist of a separate set of rims and Michelin tires, that were RoadForce balanced.

I think it is safe to conclude that my issue was not steering rack related.

same here, switched to my winter set up(stock 8 spokes with brand new blizzaks lm60s) and the vibration is completely gone.

so my sentas were causing the vibration?

Yep! I have been experimenting with different sized hub-centric rings for the better part of a year. The best size I have found for my MB wheels (MB says the wheels are 73mm and the hub is 63.5mm) is 63.36mm (and that is a smidgen large) by 74mm. I still get an intermittent vibration, but it is ever so slight. The 74mm is a tad large so I'm seriously thinking of having a custom set made of 63.3 X 73.4.

could be?

So what is the difference in your winter setup? tires, wheels, balance weights.
It could any combination of the three which is causing the vibrations. Most likely the problem is associated not in the balancing, but in the tire, wheel combination. Different tread design and different tire structure (belts, rubber) weights, the wheel material/design weighted differently too. You can always swap tires onto wheels that have no vibration to narrow it down to tires or wheels, obviously if the swapped tires start to vibrate, it would lead you to believe the tires may be the problem.

I have seen new tires shake the steering wheel out of your hand, its just a bad tire. It reminds me of the movie "My cousin Vinny" when this black man said "You got mud in your Tires."
