I have a question for you guys. When i start my 98 mark viii up after its been sitting for a while i get a miss. It last aproximately for 3 mins at the high idle. If i give it some gas it will come out of the miss. Its a pretty strong one it will shake the whole car. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
 
Dunno jibit... If it were bad gas, you'd think the miss would persist, not go away after 3 minutes. :dunno:

Does it miss when you start it and you give it some pedal after the oil pressure is up to operating norm?

Could be a fuel pump? Maybe the pumps' anti drainback check valve is bad, and it has air in it until it has a chance to fully prime itself again? Did you try pulling codes? Remember, just because the CEL is not lit, it doesn't mean you don't have stored trouble codes.

I've had bad gas act funny at idle but as long as I was driving it was fine, same as if I had water in the lines and added a bottle of heat. Who knows, I've seen some weird stuff that you just wouldn't think about :shifty:

yeah, don't let some idiot at one of the auto parts stores tell you that one doesn't exist cause the light isn't on, they don't know any better :rolleyes:
 
My guess is there is some moisture in one of the spark plug boots and when the motor is cold it shorts out but when the motor gets warm the moisture evaporates and the short goes away. Check the back plug on the drivers side.
 
Yes see i replaced the plugs about 2 weeks ago. It didnt do it before that and i'msure they are on tightly. The boots that is. Also i replaced the fuel filter and its connected correctly. I'm thinking their maybe moisture in the plug boots but who knows? It does it just when it idles. If i rev it to around 2000 RPM's it will start clearing out. And also it smokes really heavly fuel smoke? Any more ideas? I'm at school right now so i cant go into great detail but i'll will check back when i get home! Thank you all so much!
 
was there any oil on the boots or inside the cover? the O-rings on the covers are known to leak and let oil drip down onto the spark plug, that may be why you are getting the smoke
 
Actually there were 2 or 3 plugs that had collected a lot of oil on them and dirt. I had to be really careful to get it clean before i pulled the plug out of the engine so the dirty wouldnt fall down in it. How does the o-ring work? Or i guess where is it? Now taht you say it that could very possibly be it. The only thing is the smoke smells an awful lot like fuel. Like its getting an over charge of fuel or no fire in a plug.
 
the "o-ring" seals are under the valvecover. the oil will break down the boot and the the rubber will turn to mush and eventually fall apart
 
So to replace them would require me taking off the valve covers? I'm not used to coil on plug ignition haha. If i were to do this (which i will soon after you mentioned the mush thing) is there any things i should watch out for in the process? thank you all for your help
 
Yes, you will have to take off the valve covers to replace the gaskets. However, I'm not sure that's why your car is misfiring...
 
if its not the prob now it will be eventually
and as for pulling them i dunno i havent pulled mine so some one should chime in............mike? i know you pulled the covers on your 98 any input?
 
I've pulled mine with the engine still in the engine bay, but never installed them with the engine in the engine bay. They are a pain in the arse to pull. I had to fight the driver cover a bit. Had to remove the throttle body to remover the pass cover.
 
Are you getting a check engine light? If you are see if you can get someone to check the codes and see what is wrong. If it is like what mine did it was 2 bad spark plug boots. Mine happened after I changed plugs. The boots get brittle with heat and age and crack easy when you pull them off the plugs.
 
Yeah, i really hope its not the boots. Are the boots expensive? I have just changed the plugs about 2 weeks ago and the problem just now appeared. I'll run my code checker tonight!

the boots aren't expensive, I think $12 a piece, as far as it being your spark plug wires, its a Gen 2 and they don't have spark plug wires. What it could be is that the oil is fouling out the plugs. Now these are all guesses. Its hard to really tell without actually looking at it.
