Muffler Delete - where shall I administer the saw?

Hey everyone,

My name is Steve. This is in fact my first post here. I have been on forums for a while (AFM, TCCOA, the other Mark 8 site) as I've owned 5 fords in the 5 years I've been driving.

The other Mark site seems like it's full of grandpa's, and well, I'm no grandpa.

To cut the crap. I just located a nice job (co-op position with an engineering firm here in CT) and I will be retiring my bone stock 1995 Mark VIII as my daily driver and picking up a sick '05 Taurus.

I will finally have the resources to do what I had been planning all along. The mark will be turned into a hot rod, saturday night special.

My first action will be to remove the stock mufflers. I've seen a lot of muffler deletes but have no idea where you are cutting them off. I was looking at the exhaust, if I cut it right behind the stock location, I fear I will heat the gas tank.

Where have you all cut the mufflers?

Ultimately, this car will be a light to light car - 4.30 + gears, N20, Firm JMOD and dyno tune.

cut before the mufflers, that big hump isnt the gas tank its the spair tire well, the gas tank is midship (in front of the diff)
 
Have always been curious - how does the 32v 4.6 sound without mufflers?

Ghetto? Popping/crackling? Or smooth?

Our Mark is a 'beater', not worth spending money on mufflers - but I HATE the stock whisper sound.

LMAO funny thing is, one of the marks i took apart we wanted to hear it on straigh manifolds before we took the car apart, well i can assure you, you dont want to drive a 4 cammer down the street with just manifolds on it, man they are loud!!!!!!!!!!!
 
How bad does this drone on the highway at 2000rpms? It sounds pretty nice for free. Its been raining here, no chance to do it yet!
 
It drones pretty loud on the freeway (65-75mph), I dont mind, but my wife doesn't like it. I usually have the stereo too loud to notice.
 
Mine didn't drone too bad on the freeway, but it did drone.. Extending the exhaust back to the bumper or installing turndowns will help a lot in this regard, without changing the exterior sound. Also keeps exhaust out of the cabin..

+2 on the wife not liking it, but it keeps her from driving it, which suits me just fine:D ;)
 
So you guys are running with no mufflers? What about backpressure, Do you guys not care that you are robbing power from the motor? Are you just in it for the sound? You need mufflers on there, your gonna destroy that motor.
 
I ran my 93 like that for 5 or 6 years, now my 96 for 2+ years-It does not hurt the engine, as to weither it adds or subtracts HP, it does lose about 40-50 lbs and sounds great.
 
lms system has no cats a double x pipe and glasspacks, hardly any backpressure and they claim 20 more hp w/ 2.5 inch pipe.

Your uninformed response has absolutely no merit.

Backpressure is BAD. 100% BAD for power. The myth comes from the need for exhaust gas VELOCITY to maximize power. Regardless, after a catalytic converter, it really makes little difference whether or not there is a muffler. Power will not change very much at all, and any change will be positive. If nothing else, it's a weight reduction.

And you can run open headers all day without destroying anything except your hearing.

No it won't! the 3 cats provide plenty of back pressure & removing the mufflers doesn't cause any power loss. Why would you think it would destroy the engine?:confused:
 
Dam, now I know why they have to rebuild those top fuel engines every three runs, no exhaust! the should save some money and put cats and mufflers on those things.
If you put 3 inch pipe with a straight big bore glass pack with no cats on your 1.6L Honda your going to loose some gas millage, I have the third cat removed an X cross over and straight pipe to the back with a set of resonator tips gained 12RWHP on the dyno.

LMAO!!!!Never thought of that, maybe they should run smog pumps, to go with those magnets around the fuel lines and tornado air swirllers in the intake...add one of those glass bottles that are hooked up to the battery, add baking soda and H2O...

I'm off now to stuff a couple of bananas in my mufferless tailpipes so that I have needed 'backpressure'.

The car actually seems a bit stronger with the mufflers taken off. I was expecting it to sound a bit louder, but the sound falls apart after 2500rpms. It is not obnoxious by any means, and sounds similar to some rustangs I've had with full exhaust.

The cats clearly restrict the flow quite a bit, making it quiet. If you were looking for a more muscular sound, without any price tag and without sounding like a police magnet, I would suggest this 100%.

I will ultimately run cut outs directly behind the first cats. As for the backpressure / motor destruction. There does exist a myth that running open headers will destroy or burn up our small ford v8's. It stems from running very fresh motors. It has been rumored that when the engine is turned off, some dieseling does occur, pulling cold air back into the engine through the headers and warping the engine parts. Seems like a farce. I would run open headers all day as has been said before.

Side question. I'm sure some of you run the C&L MAFS and K&N filter. Does this merit the price tag? There is one on ebay right now for about half the price. If you can feel it in the butt dyno, I might pick it up. Or.. perhaps save the coin for gears. What is the consensus?
 
Mufflers don't provide any real 'backpressure' anyways, considering they're simply cans with baffles - NOT restrictors.

Considering how our cars have to vent exhaust through a measley 2" pipe before the Y is already plenty of (supposedly needed) backpressure.

Extending the exhaust back to the bumper or installing turndowns will help a lot in this regard, without changing the exterior sound. Also keeps exhaust out of the cabin..

That, was a given ;). No way should ANYBODY cut the mufflers off and leave it like that.
