Hope this is the right area for this.

Just bought a 1996 mark viii 68k miles had it had it vin checked 3 places and miles are correct.

I am not a mechanic by any means but i test drove it and it shifted perfect ran good.My ride home was almost 110 miles no problems stopped to have the air charged and set a appointment to have services done.3 days later it start making a oh jesus noise when shifting into reverse.Long story short the reverse is toast. My mechanic who is working on it has worked on fords for 20 yrs and he said the fluid had not been changed since it came off the lot...........lol might be a problem

Could have something been added to keep it from making noises when i bought it and even with the mileage check is it weird that there is or was such a lack of services ever performed on a car with such low mileage?

Good news thou at least now i have time to get exhuast , rear gears and tires done with it getting its trans fixed :D

68k isnt that many miles for a transmission. but not unheard of for them to die young though. and a lot of people have little faith in the pre-98 4r70w transmissions.

i had original fluid in mine for 150k miles and it lasted to 170k. so not critical that it wasn't changed.

also. my transmission went from chirping 2nd to dead in around 15 miles. it shook once the night before, slipped horrendously on my way to school the next day, and was totally gone halfway home. so a failure without warning is possible.

Yeah, not critical only extremely important. If proper fluid and filter changes are not done then the trans will last 60-100k with no issues at all. If the services are done properly then that same trans will last 300+k with no problem.

If the fluids smell burnt and have a tarnished look then you are gonna need a rebuild soon. If the fluids look that bad and a service is done then the trans will fail even faster. Sucks but it is what it is.

Really the fluids should be changed every 30k. I am kinda bad about it and usually push 40-45k..... well if I keep the car long enough.

good to know thanks for the replys.

Can not wait to get it back on tues and start all the other little things i want to work on.:D
