I can get the wiring harness for it and the navy system for about 800.00 with the cds. but what else would I have to have???

What wiring harness????? The one for just the Nav components? That won't cut it. You also need a complete new main body harness and that will cost you about $800 itself. Then you need EVERYTHING that goes with the system....which may include a rear view mirror with microphone (and wiring harness) if that's how your system came equipped. You will need another couple of modules, the antenna, etc. Then you get to the speakers. You will need the speaker set up that came with the Nav. Also, it is very possible (even likely) that your existing speakers are driven differently than the Nav unit...so you will have to have the wiring harnesses for all that too...or make your own. (good luck getting connectors) Then you have to tie it to the PCM...which the factory harness should do for you. I did most of my research for the Aviator. But the LS is similar. I could get my hands on the factory head unit and DVD player for nothing...and it still wasn't feasible...and I do a lot of this kind of crap.

Your dealer said it wasn't possible? WTF?

It really isn't. At least not from an ecomomic point. Can you imagine paying the labor rate they charge for rewiring most of the car??

I'm not trying to tell you it can't be done...because there is no doubt in my mind it can...and I know I could do it myself. It just didn't make economic sense to me. Honestly? I figured I could sell the car and get another one with Nav damn near as cheap.

Then I suppose it's a good thing I'm not too concerned about the economics of it. :)

Out of curiosity, what exactly do you mean when you say cost prohibitive? $4,000? $5,000?

And does all this "complicated labor" mumbo jumbo apply to the factory in-dash 6 CD changer as well (seeing as how I don't really do enough out of town driving to justify the purchase of a Navigation system in the first place)? Also, would I need to upgrade to that 12 speaker Audiophile system as well? Not that I'd mind.

to do it the factory way you are probably looking at a couple K in labor, a couple K in harnesses, modules, etc and 3 or so for the indash and trunk units (assuming you bought all this stuff new, you CERTAINLY wouldn't put USED parts in your car would you?). Then you need the speakers, amplifiers, mirror, steering wheel controls, etc. I'm guessing by the time it's all said and done you are in the 8-10K range......for $1200 street value worth of equipment.

don't go into the service menu. there's nothing of use in there.

hold down the second and 4th button on the left(menu and map I think) for ~5 seconds. a password screen will pop up. type in 917 then enter. you are now in the service menu. DO NOT PLAY AROUND WITH ANY OF THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE BUTTONS. YOU WILL FRY YOUR UNIT AND THE DEALERS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT.

Well, I took the liberty of pasting the Pioneer AVIC-Z1 over the regular setup, and I must say it's lacking the sexiness of the OEM version.

I'm kinda trying to convince myself that it's worth getting though, seeing as how it must be okay if Pioneer also makes the kits for Lincoln? Where would I find that piece that goes around the screen?

I think that looks very nice!

And Beaups...your pricing estimate wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Yeah, it's starting to grow on me. I'd probably wind up getting Pioneer speakers too, just for the sake of sticking with one brand. I know this is probably a stupid question, but would I lose the steering wheel controls? I'm thinking yes. :(

I like the Pioneer look better. You can find the surround on Team Fords website, if you click on the banner on the right and scoll down you should see it on the front page(in silver). You can get an adapter to keep you steering wheel controls. I know others have gotten steering wheel control adapters for thier double dins on this site, I forget who so maybe they will chime in.

;) The kenwood is about the best out there if you ask me but it cost more than the pioneer. as far as looks and options and that's what I bought haven't got it in yet but I am excited and next I got to figure out how to keep my steering wheel controls for the radio.....;) ;) ;)

I think it depends on what you're after. For Navigation, the consensus I read is the Pioneer is heads above the rest. Graphics, resolution, etc. Plus, the Pioneer has XM Nav Traffic. Way cool!
