need help asap please!!!!

Ok where do I start? I bought my 2002 Lincoln ls v8 about 3 years ago. Eve since I bought it, there was always a problem with putting it into drive. It never caught gear until I give it gas. It will lurch forward, but after that there at no shifting problems. So I figure its a shift solenoid. Considering no one can tell me what it is that's actually making the car do that. Today I changed both the valve cover gaskeIts. Everything went ok after some aggravation and frustration. Put it all back together and started it up. After trying to get it to catch gear itstarted to go but then there was a loud clank and it shut off. Now all of a sudden it won't turn over. When I try to start it, it seems like something is seized, and the gauges go all whacky. After a couple of tries the alarm will go off. I made sure everything was put back accordingly. But I am officially stumped. Please help.
 
Changing VCG's to resolve a drivetrain problems after thinking about it for 3 yrs ?

BTW: sounds to me like your timing jumped or your transmission is done for.

Sounds like a dead battery.

2 things I'd check here,
1) Starter
2) Battery - Whacky gauges and false alarms are giveaways of a bad charging system or a faulty battery.

Did you drop anything into the engine while you had the VC off? (Count the number of bolts you took off and put back on.)

Did the sound come from the engine (in front of you) or the transmission (Below you.)
 
It could be something with the PATS too. From what you said it's hard to determine exactly what it is. Why do you say it sounds like something is seized?
 
I just recently read somewhere that it might be the shift solenoid. But I changed the gaskets because the drivers side started to show signs of failure. And I changed coil pack 8 because it came up on the monitor that 8 was misfiring. Since I had it all off I replaced the spark plugs. But nothing was dropped, nothing was left behind, and everything was returned to normal. The nose signed like it came from underneath me. If its a tranny problem, why won't it start back up? Is that a safety feature?
 
Btw, I tried jumping it and banging on the starter. Nothing. I have a battery charger that I'm going to hook it up to in the morning for a couple of hours.
 
The red one, it's the PATS light. It can be reset by turning the key to the on position for 30 seconds before starting.
 
That I would have to get back to you guys tomorrow morning or afternoon. The car is at my brothers house.
 
sounds like something finally went out on the drivetrain... the alarm and everything else is a drained battery from trying to start a (what sounds like) a seized drivetrain.

So if the drivetrain seized, why wouldn't it start back up? It turned on just fine and was moving before the loud clunk. Then it just creased to jump again. Tried to jump it with my brothers truck but to no avail.
 
creased?

you engine and/or tanny (most likely) are seized keeping the engine from turning over. can you put the car in neutral and push the car? is your oil milky? can you hear the starter engage when you turn the key?

I might say it electrical, but the load thud leads me to believe not... Three years of driving while shifting poorly can / will do alot of damage

The engine is part of the drivetrain. If the engine is seized, then you won't be able to even turn it over.
Does the crank shaft rotate at all when you try to start it? Have you tried to turn it by hand? If it won't turn, I would pull the valve cover you were messing with off and have a good look.

If the torque converter is locked, then you should be able to turn the crankshaft, but may not be able to turn it fast enough to start the engine.

Time to pull the valve covers.

I would have considered "by hand" and "with a ratchet" to be the same thing.
 
The hose that leads from the drivers side head gasket has some milky oil there. But after taking off the cover again there isn't any milky oil. Just in the hose.

maybe he's just really strong...Or has a suit made of Iron...

Either way... Keep going. What year, engine and mileage?

No hoses to either head gasket. There are hoses attached to both valve covers.

What do the chains look like? Do the cams seem to be aligned to each other?

Now that the covers are off, when you try to turn the crankshaft with a socket wrench, do you see the chains on either side flex at all?
