Hey guys, I sold my 95 MK8 back in December :(. My goal to selling my 95 was to find a Gen2 Mark VIII, but I couldn't find a single one at the time. So I ended up buying a 95 Infiniti Q45T. The car was okay, but it was no my cup of tea. So I ended up selling the car about 2 weeks later. So after selling it, I missed my Mark so much that I set myself on finding one even if it was across the coast lol. So I found a 98 MK8 LSC about 500 miles from me. I called the guy, and asked him 100,000 question to get all the info on the car. He said it was overheating, but it never hit the red. He changed the water pump, the broken thermostat, and it still overheated. He also said he didn't know how to accurately bleed the cooling system. So I offered him $1000 for it, and he accepted. I figured worse case, I could throw a new engine in it if it was bad.

Today I received the car, and I saw blue smoke come out on start up, but it went away in 2 seconds (my 95 did that, and it had only 50k on the motor). The motor was not ticking, and ran very quiet. I checked the oil and coolant, and it all looked good. I am guessing there's air in the crossover tube. However, the crossover pipe cap is stripped, and I can't get it off with pliers. Is there any alternative to properly bleeding the cooling system. I read you could do it through the heater core, but I not 100% sure.

Body and interior of the car is in good shape for the price. Almost everything works in the car, even the speakers. This is a car I am definetly going to keep, and restore. I can't wait to get this overheating problem fix, so I can drive it around.

Well all I can say it's great to be back in a MK8 :L

You sound just like I would if I sold my Marks then bought another one! This is why I can't part ways with my turds, lol. Congrats... Now show us some sexy pictures........ of your Mark of course!

Lol, that's exactly how I feel, and I will post some pictures tomorrow.

Guys any help on how to get this crossover cap off or an alternative way to fill the cooling system.

Welcome back and yes pics are needed.
I have used a pipe wrench many times just be careful to only grab the cap
Also buy a new one in case you wreck it.

Teaser pics. I will post mine when I get the car cleaned up

UPDATE:

Ok I got the x-over cap off. I noticed that there was little coolant in the crossover tube with the engine off. Is this normal? Could someone point me to a thread on the procedure to fill the system

Welcome back. These cars are addicting. Looks like a nice one ya ot there. I sold my Mark several months back and it started to not bother me any more but then the other day I took out the 93 that me and Sapperfire own and instantly fell back in love. The power, the ride, comfort.... just excellent cars.

Yes, when its off there should be coolant just to the top of the tube. Not all the way to the top of the threads.

Looks like someone replaced the driver side headlight or the chrome lip. Other then that, it looks good. Congrats!

UPDATE:

just drove the car, and it heat does not work, and the car was starting to get up in temp after 10 miles of driving. When I got home, and let it run at idle with the x-over cap loosen, I saw bubbles coming out of it. How long do I have to let it sit for. Oh and temp stayed between 210-219F when at idle

210-219 is too hot, should be around 180. Use concentrated coolant. The heat will not blow hot if there is air in the system

I let the car idle for about 30 mins to see if it would overheat. The temp of the car topped at about 210F, but my cooling fan didn't work (it was hot wired) . When I cut the fan on, the temp dropped to around 202F. Then when I got in and drove the car around the block. As soon as the rpms rose, the temp jumped to 218F. Then after 5 mins of driving it got to 228F. I was testing the temp using my Torque Scanner on my Phone.

However, my temp gauge was reading at 1/2 way while sitting at idle, then when I drove the car, it went to the hash above normal. So idk if my scanner is reading accurately.

ANOTHER UPDATE.

FIXED the Heat (turns out the blend door was stuck)

After driving the car around. I let the car sit for about 30 minutes. When I came back, I noticed my reservoir went from full to half empty (suspect air was in the system). I filled the coolant from the crossover tube, and let it run. Started it up, and drove it again. These were my results

With the cooling fan on high:

At a stop: 212F
Driving about 40: Drops to 204F
From take up (1/3 throttle) rose to 215F.

Then after this test, I let the car sit for a minute to see if I lost any coolant, and I didn't. Started it up again to drive, and temp was at 170F. Here are result of my second test:
This time with the fans off.
Started at 179F, while driving temp rose to about 196. Did a mid throttle take off to 3000rpm, and temp rose to 208. Then dropped to 200 while crusing. At the end of the cruise about (10 minutes this time), the highest the temp got to was 212.

Then after the test drive, I let it idle for about 10 mins. It stay at 215.6 with the fans off. I then revved it up to 2000rpms for about a min, and temp went to 221. Then I turn the fans on high, and temp dropped to 194. After 5 mins of idle with the fans on, temp slowly rose to 206, and rising.

Sorry it so long, and scrambled. Does this sound like a bad t-stat or Head gasket.

I am not versed in this yet but have read many a thread. Sounds like it still needs a good burp. Remove the crossover cap and put a lard funnel in it and fill the funnel part way with coolant. Let car run to get to temp with heat on and blasting. The car will take what it needs from the funnel and when it is finished burping out the air remove the funnel and replace the cap.

Maybe if you have gone this far with it and you have no history, why not throw in a tstat and do the complete burp once and for all and you know the stat is good.

If I am wrong on the burp procedure someone please chime in, as I said I am not versed on it and going off the top of my head remembering what I have read here previous.

I think your right. After letting the car sit for about 30 mins, the reservoir went from the top the the tank, to just under the COLD FILL line.

I don't know if I would trust that scanner...

Anyway, sometimes you need to burp the system MANY times. I also recommend getting the front up on some jack stands or ramps while you're doing this.

If you need a new crossover cap let me know. I've got a whole bunch of freshly powdercoated stock ones. Unfortunately, I don't have any more of the stainless steel ones I used to make/sell. :(

man you will be in my prayers tonight. i hope like hell all you need to do as bleed the system a few more times.
