okay so i got a 95 base mark viii, prior to me getting the car, about a year and a half ago, my dad had an exhaust put in. its a catback, but not a true dual exhaust, at the end it has flowmaster 40 series mufflers. he likes it, but im a kid and i want the thing to sound way more aggressive. i don't want to change any piping because its basically all new, just want to change the mufflers. i was thinking maybe about flowmaster super 44's or cherrybomb glasspacks? if anyone could maybe recommend mufflers that will sound bad@$$, but not obnoxious or anything like that. something with a nice rumble to it. the flow 40's on the car has a low rumble when you're driving, i want something noticeable while idling, at the same time not too loud or ridiculous. let me know guys, i could use the help, thanks !

Straight pipe it. Cut them off and see how ya like it. If you do, take it to a shop so that they can extend the pipe/tips to the rear. If you don't then i'd start looking for alternatives such as dynamax bullets or get some cheapish resonators/glasspacks on ebay.

im new to some of this stuff, what do you mean straight pipe; no converters & no mufflers??

Chop the mufflers off, leave the cats alone. If you have a sazall it can be done in 5 minutes as the mufflers are at the end of the exhuast.

i would, but i can't do that here in NY, wouldn't pass inspection

Some people here will tell you that the flower chambered flow masters sound like dookie on our cars... Too poppy/raspy...

I also cut off the mufflers and extended the pipes and remounted my stock tips. I'm also running a double x in place of the third cat. I get compliments.

I love flowmasters on modular engines...they sound wicked, especially with an x pipe. The super 44's I believe may be a bit more quiet.

The 40 series flowmasters are quite loud. Your problem is all the catyltic converters. Those are quieting it down immensly

I have the flowmaster 44 on my car. I have true duals and it sounds really good when you get on it.It almost has a super car sound from inside the car but out side it sounds mean. When it idles its got rumble but quite enough to keep you out of trouble with the cops.

the exhaust shop it was done at said they cannot make a true dual exhaust for my car.. ?? would they have to remove the converters? if so i can't do that at all, wouldn't pass inspection. and thats another thing, cops lol. either you get pulled over for tint (and the tint is very light on the car), or loud exhaust.. and yes i think flows make mark 8's sound like mustangs. believe me if there were no emissions here, as far as converters, i'd have them taken out, run a x pipe, and a true dual exhaust with flow super 44's. my problem is, i just need to change mufflers now, can't do anything else( all else is new ), so would you recommend flowmaster super 44's or something else that would sound really good with my setup? (not a true dual exhaust), let me know, and possibly post a link so i can start saving up for it. thanks !

quick question. even though my exhaust isn't a true dual, if i got the flow 44's, would it sound mean like you say it does with yours lunchbox, (even though i don't have true dual)

If you want a sportier sound, true
Dual it with an H pipe

I'm using Magnaflow Bullets and they sound awesome

and before someone else mentions it..I know my tires are bald..those who wish to nag me about it can also feel free to help buy new ones

thanks and LOL @ "and before someone else mentions it..I know my tires are bald..those who wish to nag me about it can also feel free to help buy new ones"

I'm poor...that's what's up with them...I have considered buying new ones.. I've also considered finding a better job, and an actual house instead of an apartment.. I've considered buying groceries a few times (sometimes not even for me)...right now I'm happy that it has a full tank of 93 in it

I'm saving for tires (that's my next mod) yay 1 down 3 to go

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Back in 09 I purchased a used true dual cat back exhaust from a wrecked 2nd Gen. It omitted my 3rd cat & came with Flowmaster 40 series & OEM 2nd Gen tips. It sounded super flappy during idle. Back then I had no idea why. I thought the Flow's were rotted inside so I swapped them out for a set of Magnaflows. SAME raspy/flappy sound after the install! I added the X-pipe a few months later & VOILA flappy sound gone but also the exhaust quieted down immensely. When the car is cold you could barely hear it over stock. Once it warms up it sounds a bit better.

IMHO I prefer Flowmasters or Magna (bullets) over my current set up as long as I continue w/my x-pipe set up though.

Here, take a look at these old threads I started:
