I found this site while searching for some ideas on what some troublecodes for my LS are telling me. I have a 2003 LS V8, bone stock.

They are consistently 2107 and 2110, but I have also gotten 2104 and 2112 twice now. I have a code scanner and clear them after each trip. This started a little over a week ago with a code 356, showing a failing coil 6. The day before replacing the coil, the car went into ETC failsafe and also threw the 2107 and 2110 codes. I figured that was related to the coil failing. I then replaced coil 6, and I decided to replace the spark plugs while I was at it. The shop was out of Motorcraft iridiums at the time, so I picked up NGK iridiums.

When I started the car after replacing the coil and plugs, I had the smoothest idle I had had in years. That miss seemed gone and things were fine. I decided to take a neighbor to lunch and no less than 1 mile down the road, the motor stuttered horribly a few times, then went into ETC failsafe again. I do the old bit of shutting the car off and starting it over again and it will run ok for a minute or two, but it inevitably goes into failsafe soon thereafter. Over this 4 mile trip, it happened 7 times. My wife has been out of town this week so I have had to just drive like this right now and I hate it. It's unsafe.

I have done some research and some have said it is the TPS, others MAF. I have the benefit of working at an auto parts house, so I have tried both of those... no dice. I noticed no difference at all with the new TPS and MAF installed, so I put my stock units back in. It seems that the problem is worse when the engine reaches operating temp. Also, when I use manu-matic mode and keep it in a low gear to keep the motor spinning it seems that it doesn't go into ETC failsafe as much. It's when I have to stop that the turd dies.

I wonder if I just have more coils failing. I have had the valve cover gasket fix done, and I don't have a drop of oil in there any more. Actually I was very impressed at how clean things were in there since the 30,000 miles ago when I had the job done. We also replaced 4 or 5 coils at that time.

What am I looking at guys? Have any of you experienced similar issues, and what was your fix?
Thanks very much!!

It's almost certainly one or more of the other coils. (It's usually #4, but it could be any of them.) The coils develop an internal breakdown that generates RFI noise. This noise is picked up by the throttle by wire system and the safety features put the system in limp mode. I don't know where the wild guess about the MAF came from. It's not related to the codes you have.

There is a very small chance that you actually have a defective throttle body. The 03s and early 04s have a design weakness. Still, I'd start by replacing the other five coils.

BTW, if you have less than 100K miles on your LS, Ford would have paid for the gaskets to be changed and the coil that you already changed. Ford will pay for any of the other coils that are defective.

Thanks joegr!

Unfortunately my car now has north of 130k miles, so no free fixes for me. Also, my car wasn't throwing codes until over 105k, so they denied paying to fix the valve cover issue. Thankfully I knew a Ford mechanic and he did the job for under $700, vs the dealer's quote of $1,800.

I'll pick up a few more coils this weekend and see what's up. Unfortunately our coil tester at work doesn't accomodate my style of coil. I'll swap a couple at a time and see if anything changes.

Just wanted to give all 1 of you an update. :D

I got 2 new coils at work today and swapped out #s 3 and 4. No difference at all. Went into failsafe within 15 seconds of starting it up again. I was pretty bummed, but decided to keep plugging (haha!) along. I swapped out #s 1 and 2 and voila!!!! I went for a 15 minute minute loop to include an 80+mph freeway blast, lots of stop lights/signs and some 30mph neigborhood driving. Not a hiccup.

YAY!!!!
