car overheats in heavy traffic (especially in the summer heat). turning on the heat helps but when i turn it off she heats up again. I have changed thermostat, flushed the system and cleaned radiator of debris (leaves and other :q:q:q:q), still overheats, but only in heavy traffic. My mechanic says its the pump for the fan (the fan only kicks on after the temp is in the red) but the part is like $420. I read the post about switching to an electric fan, but would $280 plus 5 hours of labor be worth it? If anyone has a used pump or knows of where i could get one, Or any other ideas i would appreciate it. thanks.

shop around

do not buy a used pump, they are too flaky to take a chance on them. Shop around for a new one first. You may actually not need a pump but an actuator. Is the pump leaking?

The fan, and accoutrements, is still working fine on my 143K '02. With that said, I'll go to an electric fan when I do the engine change later this summer. I'm told that a boneyard fan from a Taurus works good. Or I may go aftermarket.

if you end up needing just the hydraulic pump you can get a reman from oreillys for $56 . just order the power steering pump and it comes with the sensor hole and line holes to use it as either. in fact i changed both pumps when i had my engine out,and to actually use for power steering you have to plug the sensor hole with a short bolt.
