Hey guys. I just got an LS this morning bought it from my Grandmother, she is getting a new one. Its an 01 v6 with 60k miles on it. I gave her 7k out the door for it, pretty good deal from what I understand. I have never owned an american car or an automatic or know anything about them so I have a few questions which I assume will be very simply to you guys. Thanks so much!!

1. When driving normal should I leave it in D4 or D5, any time should I be in D3, explain when and why.
2. She has taken very good car of this car it looks new and runs great. Please inform me of ANYTHING I need to be aware of, things to watch out for, things to keep up with, gas to use, certain oils synthetic or not, places to take it, etc.......
3. The car I had, had an HID kit on it for the lights, how are the lights on this car, and does it have an HID kit.
4. What are her wheels and tires worth? There shiny chrome I guess, and the tires have about 10k on them. I wanna get some bigger and different looking wheels.
5. From what I can see it just has basic functions on the inside, I dont know what trim packages were availible for this car. I thought they all had a computer on the bottom right of the gauges but here doesnt light up, just has trip a,b on the left.
6. How is the stereo system, good or do I need to start researching aftermarket stuff like I have done in every car I have. What kind of radio is it, does it have a sub, how many speakers, etc.....
7. Gas mileage, im 70% highway.???

Thats all I can think of now, I will know more tomorrow when I get to drive it and go over it and everything, thats just stuff I noticed today. I know there stupid questions but thanks!!!

1. i keep it on D4 for the most part. and put it on other gears when i race sometimes.
2. the COP's are the main problem in these cars. i'm not too familiar with the V6's but i know it's a little more difficult to get to the lower COP's. also the gasket needs to be changed around the mileage you have.
3. there are after-market hid kits that you can upgrade your car to. get know ken from lskoncepts because he's one of the few people that offer after-market parts for our cars.
4. not really sure how much you could get for the wheels but you can always use ebay as a reference to compare prices.
5. the message center i believe was not available for the V6 (that's the extent of my knowledge as far as the message center goes for V6) there are trim packages for the LS, also through ken in lskoncepts.com.
6. the stereo depends on what package you have. there's the alpine system that has the 6 cd changer. there's a lot of people on here that have problems with their stock speakers as well, not just the deck. also there is an amp rack where the 6x9's are at.
7. i get 16.8 mpg all the time with my LS but i have a lot of weight due to my 20's and all the audio stuff in the trunk.

feel free to ask more questions and know that the search method is very effective in this forum if you narrow it down to key words. hope this helped, but my knowledge is not that extensive because it's a V6. speak to hyelifeLS member he has a V6 and can be of better assistance.

COP's-what is that??
Gasket change??
I have a six cd changer in the trunk so im guessing I have the alpine system, someone wanna give me the layout of the system, speakers, sizes, locations, sub?

Thanks. I have been searching a lot I narrowed that list down by about half, lol.

the COP's are coil on plugs. these tend to the main culprit in sputtering and rough idle for a lot of LS owners here (including me). there are new HD coils that are being test fitted soon so that might be an added upgrade for the coils. spark plugs are not a huge issue but still need to be changed at around your mileage. the gasket change is here http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tech/Lincoln-LS/IgnitionCoil00-02V6/. that's for the coils but the gasket is there so it's the same thing.

Turn on the radio, press buttons 3 & 6 at the same time and it will go through a speaker walk-around test. That should tell you where they are at least ;)

And.... :W

Thanks I read the stuff. My Grandmother just had all that done as far as I understand!!! Thanks for the radio tip, were can I find out all those tricks like you just told me about the radio and stuff? I am sure there are tons more!!

If it has the Alpine system it should have the Alpine logo right on the faceplate of the head unit. Either way, all of the stereo systems use Ford speakers to my knowledge, which are petty decent for factory, but some people find it necessary to upgrade.

If your car has subs, there will be 2 of them in the rear deck with a small amp mounted in between on the bottom. Just pull down the cover in the trunk and you should see them, but to remove them you have to take out the rear dash cover inside the car.

Fuel mileage all depends on how you drive the car, but you should get about 24 to 26 on the highway.

You can just put the car in D5 for everyday driving. That allows the engine full use of all 5 gears. I find it useful to put the car in 2 when I'm at a stop on hills, it keeps it from rolling back when you're ready to pull forward.

If you live in an area where it snows in the winter you should hang on to your factory wheels to use with snow tires. No sense in messing up expensive after market wheels.

Welcome. Enjoy the great car.

I am guessing that you have the non-sport model as you mentioned the D3 in the automatic. These cars in sport trim have the select shift transmission with + - on the side, nothing fancy.

As Rick said, none of the V6s have messege center, so no display on the right.

That V6 engine is pretty good, not very powerful, but does move you around. I get about 18-20mpg with 18" wheels, used to get 16-18 with 20" wheels. Most of the V6s don't have gasket problems or any other common problems. In 137000 miles I only had to change the coils and the spark plugs for this engine, well and used Mobil 1 oil and filter.

The transmission solenoids and valve bodies go bad and they are about $1000-$1500 to fix, but if your grandmother had em changed before then you probably won't need em again.

There was no HID option on 00-02 models, but you can easily put an aftermarket HID kit.

That's about it, put some pictures up or at least tell us the colors of your LS.

Most of what you're asking have be discussed here many, many times. You should search the forum for threads related to these questions. Reading the owner's manual will also answer many of your very basic questions, like what gas to use (Premium).

Here are my pithy answers for ya:

1. Don't drive it in D4. Use D5 for most of your regular driving -- that's what the owner's manual recommends. You do have a copy of that, right? You have read it cover to cover, right? If not, see my comment above.

2. Do a search and read the forum threads. And read the owner's manual.

3. The 2001 LS did not have HID lights, even as an option. Aftermarket kits are available from Ken Garrison at LSKoncepts (www.lskoncepts.com).

4. Who knows, check ebay. Look at pix of other LSes to get an idea of other wheel choices.

5. If you're nice, I'll email you an Order Guide for the 2001 LS which explains all the equipment and options that were available. The feature you're talking about is the Message Center (buttons below the center air vents) and it was only available on V8 models.

6. Depends on your ears. :D The order guide will answer your questions. So will the owner's manual (did you read that yet?)

7. Gas mileage depends on many factors such as how you drive, the weather, fuel blend, etc. In general, the V6 gets 18-24 MPG on premium gas.

Yea email me that would be great. Yes I just finished reading the manual cover to cover!!

i've always drivin my cars (all, both of them, lol) in D4. have i been hurting my engine doing this? i guess it's a habit that i picked up while driving my previous car. i have no manual, i use this forum for that :D
