Guys about 2 months ago, I installed new coils and plugs. I used autolite double platinums with global automotive coils. Today in the morning the car was working great. Now, when I left work in the afternoon, that I started her up, she had the shakes and soon after the check engine light came on. I arrived home and I unplugged my negative cable to clear the code. Then I took off the coil cover on the drivers side and noticed that my new precious coils have little burnt holes on top, all 4 of them on my drivers side show the same burnt symptom. I havent taken off the coil cover on the passenger side yet. Could these coils have gone bad????? your help is really appreciated.

the burnt section of the coils is right on top by the connector, each coil have 2 little small burnt holes on top. Im guessing these coils went to crap. I dont understand though there is no oil deposit to be found anywhere.

If the plug gap is too big, then the coil will build to too high of a voltage. The too high voltage will look for the shortest path to ground. In this case, it seems that maybe the path to the power connector was shorter than the gap of the plug.
Of course, it could just be that these were poorly made coils.

Sounds strange. I don't know if I would blame the plugs though. I know a lot of the special plugs(platinum, iridium, +2, +4) are pre-gapped.

yeah the guy at the counter where I bought them said that I didnt have to gap'em. Im thinking its the coils that went bad. Im going to take them off and try to get them to exchange them for me.

Oh, Global off of Ebay? Yeah if that's who you're speaking of then yeah, very mixed results on those. I would go with alanisdeals for a set of coils. Haven't heard of any issues with coils from that seller. You could also try the Accel coils that guys are using from the 4.6L Mustang engine. They work well on the GEN1 LS from what I've read but you won't be able to put on your coil covers and they aren't held down by the stock bolts. There are a few threads running now about it.

Hope this helps!

You can still use the stock bolts but no the covers won't fit.

Well dudes, I went to global automotive today, and I met the owner. Its about 22 miles away from my house. Hes a nice young cat. The place is a small warehouse and he says that he runs his own business. He didnt have the coils, and said that he has about 6 back orders. He told me to call him tomorrow, 2 see if he gets them in, so that I can go pick them up. So ill keep you guys posted. He also explained to me that they have to be installed with a lot of electric grease, and thats why most probably they failed.

I have been advised that stock OEM plugs are the preferred plug replacement. These vehicles are tuned precisely for the hardware that came with it, and aftermarket parts, even high quality ones from good brands, are a risk. If you put the original plugs in, at least that can't be the issue.

Or so I'm told by some local mechanics who wrench on these things.

I put it on/in the boot where it contacts the spark plug.

You also need to put it on/in the boot where it attaches to the coil. The idea with the grease is to create a liquid tight seal. This includes the top and the bottom of the boot.

so what are you saying that i need to take off the rubber end that protects the spring and put grease on the spring also?

wow, i guess im going to bathe the plugs in grease then???? I pick up the plugs tomorrow, and im also going to buy the electric grease, any specific grease i should look for?

any dielectric grease will do, and you only need it where you have elctrical contact or in really tight spaces.

well I put the grease on the tip of rubber end where the coil meets the spark plug, and so far so good, took her for a spin and shes back in da hack. Thanks to all of you for your help.

guys when i first changed the coils, i also changed out the spark plugs. Now with the new set of coils i was driving around and she still shakes and hesitates a little bit, do you think the new spark plugs went bad also?

well guys shes all fixed and rolling, i took her to my mechanic to get his opinion, and guess what, some how thru the coil covers water got in the spark plugs and messed everything up. So i put in new motorcraft plugs and shes all fixed. Has anybody had this issue with the coil covers? some how the inner atachments that go into the head covers do not go in with enough pressure and when you screw in the coil cover it pops right out. Im thinking on crazy glueing these things, whats your input?

There are revised parts that are supposed to keep water from the cowl from pouring on and into the coil covers. Field Service Action 07N09 gives the details.

My 04 had gasket sealant applied to the coil covers from the factory.
